Rice tries to put positive spin on year of disasters
http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/rice-tries-to-put-positive-spin-on-year-of-disasters/2006/12/20/1166290613394.html

WHAT many may see as turmoil in the Middle East is partly the result of the Bush Administration hastening historical forces that were destined to reshape the region, the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, has said.

"The old Middle East was not going to stay," Dr Rice said on Tuesday. "Let's stop moaning the old Middle East. It was not so great and it was not going to survive anyway." The results would not be known for decades, she said.

In a year-end interview, Dr Rice emphasised the positive in a year that saw the radical Islamic groups Hamas and Hezbollah gain strength in the region, Iran ignore international demands to suspend its nuclear program and Iraq teeter on the edge of civil war.

She attributed the setbacks to "counter-revolutionary forces" seeking to undo US success in the region. Dr Rice likened the current period to the challenges the US faced after World War II.

4. "it was not going to survive anyway"
I assume the people of the Middle East are laughing their asses off at that one.

A 200 year old country has no business lecturing the cradle of humanity about survival and longevity. It's like a 2 month old telling his grandma that she doesn't know anything about life.
