What the hell is wrong with Florida?

I know the list of screw ups is long but I'm referring to the 34 minute execution of an inmate the other day and the following idiotic cover up.

Few States have more consistently botched executions than the idiots that run the prison in Starke. I don't know of any that lie quite as badly about why. I don't think it matters whether you believe in the death penalty or not to think that this is just too much. Then again even if you believe that the guy being killed deserves any pain he feels the idiocy shown by the State in their pathetic cover ups is beyond doubt. At least in my mind.

In 1990 they burned Jesse Tafero to death and lied about the reason. They claimed that the flames were due to the use of an artificial sponge in the headpiece and proceeded to "prove it" by sticking a piece of the sponge in a goddamned toaster until it smoked. The worst thing was the media bought the excuse and so did the Florida Supreme Court. A frickin toaster doesn't conduct electricity it heats stuff up, of course the sponge smoked.

In 1997 they burned Pedro Medina to death and once more they blamed the poor sponge for all the smoke, it was improperly applied. How in the hell could you improperly apply a sponge.

In 2001 Allen Davis had a nose bleed during his electrocution. Now, not really a botched execution, everything worked properly this time. But a Florida State Senator (Ginny Brown-Waite)witnessed the show and proclaimed loudly that although she was at first horrified by the spectacle she noted that the blood pouring out from under the death mask was forming into the shape of a cross on the previously white shirt of Davis. This, in her own words, was a message from God saying he supported the execution. This, in my opinion, psychotic bitch is now a congress-critter from the fifth district of guess where - Florida. Good job people, electing this piece of work.

In 2000 Florida Corrections had pretty much given up trying to figure out how electricity works. I guess they couldn't find a toaster that didn't burn sponges. They were now on the oh so humane lethal injection bandwagon. They took 33 minutes to try to find a vein in Benny Demps body. They eventually resorted to a medical procedure called a cut-down to find a vein they could stick the catheter in. But of course, they didn't have a real doctor there so they cut into him in both the leg and groin, funny thing they still couldn't do it so they abandoned the attempt. They already had one drip started but they continued this because Florida law insisted they run two.

Now we move to the other day. The goons at Starke once more fuck it up and can't insert a venous line, they ran the needles right through the veins. They hit the inmate with two doses of chemicals and it takes 34 minutes before the guy dies. Witnesses state that the inmate was awake until after the second dose. Does the Government of Florida admit the obvious, that they are clueless idiots? Of course not, some putz in a suit comes out and states that they expected the second dose because Diaz had liver disease and therefore he could not metabolize the drugs properly. What the hell... This is almost as stupid as the toaster excuse, at least this time people with a little bit of a college education spoke up and reminded the Government of Florida that the chemicals needed to lethally inject an inmate do not need to be metabolized by the liver.

Just a bit of a rant.

1. Just another screw up where there's a Bush in charge.
I wish we could exile the whole family to Mars.

14. No, they'd pollute whatever might be living under rocks and within
ice filled lava tubes underneath. They may only be bacteria, but they still don't deserve that family.

I'd prefer to send them up on the shuttle and put them into permanent orbit as a warning to extraterrestrials about how fucked up this planet can get.

10. The only way to protect yourself
Is to consume large quantities of alcoholic beverages, and walk around a green pasture for hours, dodging alligators and little white balls.

But, it works!

3. I support the death penalty and even I think it should be suspended.
if we can't get it right then abandon it. We kill innocents. We inflict torture instead of justice on the guilty through our stupidity and mistakes. If we can't find professionals willing to be there to start the IV's and competent people willing to administer the drugs then give it up. If we can't be absolutely sure we have the right guilty person then give it up.

The reason I support the death penalty is quite frankly I think it is more humane than life imprisonment for the truly guilty. But we botch it so many times that I really wonder if America is even capable of properly using the death penalty.

4. Although I am opposed to executions because of their costs and
I am not sure if the prisoners ever get good legal advice but why not
just shoot them?

3 .32 caliber slugs into the base of the brain would do it every time.
quick, painless, and foolproof.

Capital punishment is killing a person ..... so why try to "clean it up?"

6. For six months, the heat index is between 110-120F
Edited on Fri Dec-15-06 05:34 PM by Artiechoke
AT least in South Florida, where the majority of the populace reside. It is something that is downplayed on the news. As a matter of fact, it is common to see the weather anchor men and women proclaiming what a beautiful day it is when the temp is 93 in the shade(120 in the sun) with 80% humidity.
I have good reason to believe that many people die of heat stroke here than is reported. Don't want to stop the tourist and real estate dollars...

Diagnosis: state-wide, heat induced brain damage

15. That'd be my guess
Florida is VILE, even in the winter.

I no longer have ties there, thank goodness, so I don't ever have to go back.

12. It's interesting. As someone raised in L.A., to see the shift
The center of wackiness is now Florida. Read the books of Carl Hiassen. Nothing in my old one time home town "La La Land" comes close to the kind of nuttiness one finds in Florida. Compared to Florida, L.A. seems almost tame.

13. I think it was a message from God saying "Stop this madness!"
she noted that the blood pouring out from under the death mask was forming into the shape of a cross on the previously white shirt of Davis. This, in her own words, was a message from God saying he supported the execution.

Ms. Brown-Waite is forgetting what little bits of actual Christian theology she ever knew. Think, Ginny: What was the Cross used for, and why is it a central symbol in Christianity? :dunce:
