20. Yup! What does it say...
about us that only a good NCO keeps the troops from acting like animals.

I'll always be grateful to one Gunny. He told us - in a more fatherly tone than we had heard from him before - that we didn't want to do anything that we'd be ashamed of for the rest of our lives. He said we wouldn't be in the war forever, and that we should think of situations beforehand so that we wouldn't just react with the violence we'd been taught and the bitterness we'd learned.

You can bet their mommas never taught that shit to those guys.

6. These animals should not be permitted back in our society.
Again, they're not caught on video, they're playing to the camera.

They murder the parents and exploit the children.

They don't care. They're pure evil.

This is what Republicans live for.

18. whatever
Just for a moment, imagine you're an American soldier stuck in Iraq and you hate being there. You make a cynical joke of the situation with a bunch of kids who don't understand English. You get them to chant Fuck Iraq because you hate being there and the kids don't know what they're saying. You're so fucking worked from being in danger and doing a job you didn't think you would have to do that it seems like a good joke when you start, but by the end you are, tension released, feeling like crap and say on tape, that is so wrong.

Then the videotape your buddy made gets released, and a bunch of liberals back home make a big stink of it. Never mind you're a democrat and you don't want to be prosecuting an unjust war, you suddenly think the cons you know might be right when the liberals back home give you shit for this stupid video moment.

Don't make a deal of this. My scenario may very well not be what happened, but it could be, and damning the soldiers for an incident that doesn't claim lives seems exceptionally wrong-headed right now. There is room in my imagination for soldiers simply stressed about their lives in Iraq and making bad decisions. I hope their is in DUs imagination as well.

26. there is a whole world of difference
between muttering under your breath "fuck this place" out of frustration, and teaching the children of the country you are supposed to be helping to say "fuck Iraq".

there is NO excuse.

and just who are you to tell us what not to make a big deal out of?

32. in your scenerio, if that soldiers realizes and says that is so wrong
and buddy releases his video

and democrats and (others) are also bothered saying that is so wrong

how do the democrats get the blame

this soldier would continue on the moral path of ultimately taking resposnibility for what he did. knowing he was the one to put a bad light on all soldiers. and pissed at friend for releasing

IF that soldier tend the way of your scenerio.... then he lacks the same character that allowed him to make that tape in the first place

22. With All Due Respect, This Isn't About U.S. Troops.
It's about 2 immature pricks who thought they were funny but were really just dumb fucks.

It gets a bit frustrating to me when I see threads like this pop up that though not explicitly, seem to want to generically assess behaviors like this to U.S. troops in general. It is cherry picking at its best.

I can understand where you and others are coming from who post stuff like this, it just bothers me when it is done in a way that implies U.S. troops in general are pricks, immoral, immature etc...

The fact is that we have what, like 150,000 troops there? 2 of the 150,000 (in this incident) acted in a dumbass manner by getting a group of iraqi kids to say 'fuck iraq'. In reality, we face far greater ratio of pricks like that in our lives every single day, so for some to imply this is systemic in our troops is quite disingenuous and disrespectful to the tens of thousands of brave men and women serving over there.

So though I do absolutely agree that what these two individuals did was quite stupid, it had nothing to do with them being 'U.S. troops' and was just simply two pricks thinking they're funny. But like I said, 2 of 150,000. You probably could peg 2 people like that just in your place of employment, which probably only has 100 co-workers (generalizing, of course).

I'm a firm believer that the majority of our troops are brave and honorable heroes and they have my full support, sympathy for a failed presidential policy and prayers that they return safely. I don't think they should be grouped as a whole into the bad policies, judgments or disgraceful behaviors of a statistically minute sample.

Just my two cents.

31. I disagree - it IS about our troops
For one thing, this is hardly an isolated incident. Abu Gharib, the rape of a teenage girl, and a whole assortment of other war crimes come to mind. Secondly, and most importantly, they're in US uniforms. They represent our troops, whether we want to pretend it's "just a few bad apples" or not. Why do you think the Iraqis want us out so badly? It's because we've been treating them like dogshit or worse!

34. Why is it about the troops when...
Bushco wants to tell us that we are hurting them because we speak out or its about them when they pick and choose a few (such as Slannity does) who will spout the line that the troops don't want to leave, they want to stay and finish the job of helping people. When in reality we know that a lot of the troops don't give a damn about democracy over there or the people...

24. If I was there at the behest of
idiotic leaders on one side and indifferent Iraqis on the other, I'd say fuck Iraq too. These guys are constantly in danger of dying, for no good reason, and they're playing a prank. Big deal. They aren't taunting kids with water (THAT was sick) or anything. They certainly aren't "animals" for a lame joke.

I doubt this behavior is representative of the thousands of young men and women who are there, and the ones in this video obviously need additional training.
