New Group Proposal: Conspiracy Theories
Now that it seems that the admins are shutting down even discussion of the phenomona of conspiracy theories, it seems to me that we could use a group where the tinfoil hat brigade (myself included in some instances) could blow off steam.

Currently, the 9/11 group is the only forum where these theories can be discussed, and that discussion is restricted only to speculation surrounding September 11th and related events. It seems we need a more general outlet for some of the other more speculative (or censored, depending on your viewpoint) stories surrounding the BFEE.

For example, where would I post an article on the Contra/Cocaine connection? What about SecDef Gates' possible involvement in the October Surprise? Are these appropriate for the General Discussion group? It seems that many of these decisions come down to judgement calls that I'd like to see left to the posters of DU.

Locking or deleting threads that have such an obvious following is not the answer. Depending on one's perspective, that either supresses the truth or keeps nonsense from being soundly debunked. Either way, we need a real discussion group devoted to these issues.

1. IranContra, BCCI and CIA drugrunning are part of the government record and are
LONG PAST being considered 'conspiracy theories' even though BushInc tried like heck to say otherwise.

Agreed, but at some point these were all "conspiracy theories"
And at any rate, the current policy only serves to dampen discussion of these issues.

3. Yep, the CIA drugrunning docs are right there on the CIA website
It's not a theory, it's a fact.

Are these types of threads really deleted?

2. Iran Contra is NOT a conspiracy theory
at least not in the sense you understand it

There was a conspiracy, and people were prosecuted for it. Some even spent some threat of jail (Ollie North)

The problem the admins have is not with Iran Contra, but with the sky is falling every time something happens. Shit happens, trust me.

4. Locking
There will be no conspiracy theories group.

If you want to discuss conspiracy theories, take it to the September 11 forum.
