Last Friday, I posted a thread asking for suggestions for a charity donation drive. For those of you who missed it, here is a link to the post on my DU Journal:
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Skinner/146 Based on members' suggestions, the DU admins picked a charity on Monday. (We'll let you know who we chose when we announce the start of the charity drive. I've got to keep some suspense going so you all won't lose interest. :) ) We contacted them on Tuesday and asked if they had some way to accommodate our desire to keep track of the dollar value of all the donations from DU members. They said that they would be able to do so, but it's taking a few days for their computer people to find the time to set it up. They are hoping to be finished sometime Friday.
With luck, we'll be able to start the donation drive sometime Friday, or Monday at the latest. Here are a few details:
- Donations will be accepted online. You will donate directly to the charity, on that charity's website.
- 100% of the money you donate will go to that charity. Democratic Underground will NOT be collecting the donations and we will not get a cut or kickback from the money you donate.
- Since you are donating directly to the selected charity, you will get the tax deduction.
- The charity will give me periodic updates on the total amount of money raised (probably one update per day), and I will post updates on the discussion forum.
- The charity fund drive will probably run until the end of the year.
If anyone is thinking about making a large donation to the chosen charity, consider offering your donation in the form of a challenge. For example: offer to donate $500 to the charity if DUers raise $5000. Or offer to match all donations made on Wednesday, up to some maximum. If you might be interested in doing something like that, please send me a private message and let me know what you had in mind.
Thanks.
