4. after a day or so, it would be an opportunity to say that he had insurance-
for without this-----would he have had the surgery? the medical workup to find the abnormality.

9. actually, it happens all the time
I work in a community Emergency Department where we see a large proportion of uninsured/underinsured patients. When someone comes in with stroke-like symptoms, they get treated like anyone else, no better, no worse. If they need an angiogram or an MRI or emergent surgery for an identified aneurysm or AVM, they get it. I call a neurosurgeon and get them transferred to their care without questions regarding insurance. Decisions are not made in the emergent setting on ability to pay.

11. Improved available health care
Edited on Thu Dec-14-06 11:12 AM by JustABozoOnThisBus
that would be a great accomplishment. I wonder if that was part of N. Pelosi's comments today. (I didn't see it, doing other stuff).

The advantage that congressfolk have is that after it's done, they won't be hounded for payment. We could all use a little of that.

Edit to add: Good news about Sen Johnson.

12. People without insurance get hospital care all the time. Unfortunately,
they get charged way higher rates than the insurance companies do for care of their customers..........I suspect a trip to the ER and subsequent hospitalization with major surgery is a fast ticket to bankruptcy for most people.

13. yep, for some, but...
many have learned that no one's going to make you pay your bill. You could argue that these people are already essentially bankrupt, but we do get our share of folks who frequent the ER for any and all things with the justification that they can't afford insurance, they've burned their bridges with all local primary care docs, so they might as well come to the ER where they can get treated "for free".
