Doesn't sound to me like Conyers isn't going to investigate
Here's the e-mail I received today:

Dear Sharon,

I wanted to share with you the news that I have been elected by the Democratic Caucus as the Chairman designate of the House Judiciary Committee in the 110th Congress. While I am now the Chairman-designate, I will not assume the Chairmanship until January when the new Congress is sworn in on January 4. I am very honored to be elected by my colleagues to this important position.

Forward this email to friends and family

I also am very grateful to you. Together, we helped bring public attention to the Downing Street Minutes, warrantless wiretapping, and the disenfranchisement of Ohio voters and on many, many other fronts. While the public has expressed its concern about these issues, the Republican Congress was largely derelict in looking at any of the Bush administration's excesses. Thankfully, these -- and other -- areas will now be subject to greater scrutiny and examination, and the lack of oversight of the last six years will finally yield to checks and balances.

For my part, I believe this election was very much about restoring transparency and accountability to Washington and I will seek to do that as Chairman. I think the Judiciary Committee should become a place where we tackle important legislative issues, like lobbying reform and election reform, and where we ascertain the truth for the American people. I hope I will be the kind of Chairman you can be proud of.

It won't happen overnight. There is the inevitable lag between the election, the lame duck session of Congress, and the transition to the Majority. And there is so much left undone over the last six years.

Most importantly, I wish you a happy holiday season and I thank you for everything you have done in the past and will continue to do in the New Year to build a better democracy.

Your Friend,

John Conyers, Jr.

1. I have faith in Conyers and think he's just getting his ducks in a row.
He's my favorite pitt bull (along with Waxman) and I think they both will bring facts to light that will enrage the public. Let the investigations begin!

2. Sharon, be honored. That's a great letter.
It looks like he'll investigate. Why? He investigated when he had to meet in basements and endure the cynical scoffing of the dreadful Dana Milbank of the WaPost. He investigated when he went to Ohio, he recently sent his second letter to the Media consortium demanding the raw data from the National and State Exit Polls, 2004.

All he's saying is that he won't do it day one, they have a transition of sorts and he may be staffing.

I think anyway. He mentions great issues. I don't read this as a blow off, rather a give me a bit and you'll see the action begin.

He's got a job to do and he's been around long enough to know how to get it done.

5. This went to his whole e-mail list, so I wasn't singled out to get it
But I'm glad I did. As promised, I will report back after I attend his forum in town tomorrow night.

18. this quote worries me
Will other members of congress support the action Congresswoman McKinney has brought forth?

At the table in what could be considered her impeachment “war room” the question is brought up a number of times.

Mike, an advisor to McKinney, mentions, “Conyers was supposed to have investigations. They were chomping at the bit 6 months ago to do subpoenas.”

McKinney quietly replies, “Now they say they aren’t even going to issue subpoenas.”

Looking up from her papers she takes a deep breath, “I’m going in alone on this one because now it is all about them playing majority politics.”

-------

I think they need pressure, it certainly couldn't hurt

This DUer had a fabulous idea...it should be reposted...

4. I think this shows that he WILL investigate
Especially the comment about transparency and accountability. He intends to hold the * admin accountable for their crimes.

6. Exactly my point
It is proof that he does intend to investigate. There were some folks here last week who fell for McKinney saying he told her he wouldn't investigate now. I knew that couldn't be true.

12. I think you're not wrong to say Conyers won't refuse to investigate
Those who don't say Conyers wouldn't investigate aren't wrong.

When the ducks are all in a pretty little row, the Lame duck will implode.

17. another Conyers quote
"I have agreed with Speaker-to-be Pelosi that impeachment is off the table. Instead, we agree that oversight, accountability and checks and balances - which have been sorely lacking for the last six years - must occur. I have nothing but respect for those who might disagree, but that is where I come out."

20. There is no doubt in my mind
that Conyers is an honorable man and will do the right thing. Investigations will proceed and he will do what is right for the country.

Everyone needs to "hand write" letters of encouragement to his office. He will need to show that there is support for his actions. Write him today - do not delay.
