LANSING, Mich. -- Assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian will be paroled in June, state Corrections spokesman Leo Lalonde said Wednesday.

Kevorkian, who claimed to have assisted in at least 130 deaths in the 1990s, was imprisoned in 1999 for his role in the last of the deaths.

The ailing former pathologist has promised he would not assist in a suicide if he was released from prison. He is 78.

1. Assisted suicide is okay by me
My father spent time (for a short while) in a nursing home and at his home before he died of Alzheimer's. If I am ever diagnosed with that vile disease I hope a Dr K is around. I'd rather die then put my wife through hell on earth which is the best description for Alzheimer's. There is no value to that kind of life and no religious zealots should force my loved one's to suffer financial ruin because they "value" me.

Isn't it strange that a parole date is set so far in advance?

6. I've seen more than one person helped out by a compassionate
physician who was so sick of watching the suffering he risked having some right to life fanatic turn him in.

My own mother begged me for help which I had no way of supplying her. My pop intervened, saved up two months' worth of benzodiazepine sleeping meds and put them next to her bed. I noticed she stopped asking for my help in assisted suicide. My pop fessed up at the end and I thanked him. She never used those pills, but I know their presence gave her a great deal of comfort and allowed her to enjoy what little she had left.

The problem with Dr. Kevorkian was mainly that he was a weird man and not a terribly sympathetic character. His great gift to us was opening up the debate on when our medical technology is prolonging life or prolonging death. For that I'll always be grateful.

I know he's a sick man, too. I just hope he gets some decent time outside.

2. Good! His imprisonment was a violation of morality and never should have been.

9. I totally agree.
I've heard some frightening things about him. But my experience from seeing him interviewed was that he was a good man.

3. The state doesn't want to pay his medical bills anymore
but it is about time for his parole, anyways-I think he got 10 years, and gets an early out for good behavior (he's a model inmate).

4. Bush's cat sick?
This was a plot in That's My Bush. He had Kevorkian paroled to rig up a suicide machine for his wife's sick cat.

5. I'd like to see his work honored by the new Congress
But I doubt that'll happen.

He's a good person, strange, but good.

7. I have no problem with assisted suicide for terminal patients.
I've always thought it a tragedy that a person could offer a more compassionate passing for a family pet than they could for a family member.

12. Release Dr. Kevorkian NOW you damn cowards! He should never
have been sent to prison in the first place.

Why make a dying man wait until June of next year?
