What's going to happen when it's showdown time in 2007?

We've all seen several excellent signs that the Dems are going to conduct hearings on BushCo crimes next year. We also know that Bush and Cheney, backed by Gonzalez, are convinced they operate above the law. So, what do you think is going to happen when the subpoenas hit the fan?

Here are some of my guesses, but I'd really like to hear with other DUers think.

Dem Senator issues subpoenas for small fry. The White House tries stonewalling but eventually caves. Small fry testify to a bunch of hooey (such as "Bin Laden determined to strike within the US" doesn't mean Bin Laden is determined to strike within the US).

Dem Senator asks higher-ups to testify. Higher-ups refuse, and DS issues subpoenas. Here's where it gets interesting. BushCo refuses to honor subpoenas. DS takes them to court. Court finds for DS, BushCo appeals. It goes to SCOTUS.

Assuming SCOTUS does the right thing and orders BushCo to honor subpoenas (not at all a fair assumption). At this point, does BushCo comply?

What if BushCo doesn't comply? Who's in charge of enforcing the subpoenas? Is it the Justice Department? Does Gonzalez simply refuse to enforce them? Does the committee go to the city police to enforce the subpoenas?

At this point, do the Republicans throw up their hands and say "enough. He has to go"? Do they scream for impeachment?

I honestly don't have answers to these questions. I'd love to hear your opinions.

1. I think once the news from investigations is revealed, whatever support
Bush has will disappear. Clinton was much more popular than Bush, and the GOP went after him, even though he really didn't do anything against the people of the United States.

Bush, on the other hand, has. And I think once the dirt starts coming out, people will want him removed from office. And I think that includes many of the die hard supporters as well. All but the most addicted Kool-Aid addicts will see that Bush was a bad choice.

I rarely come across anyone these days who approves of the job he's doing, and most of them will admit he isn't a good pResident.

3. I think they can walk and chew gum at the same time
Governing managed to go forward during Watergate. It's their responsibility to check and balance the executive branch. If they don't do it, they're ignoring their duty.

4. If keeping a dangerously out-of-control "unitary executive" in check...
...isn't governing, I don't know what is.
