There is this book - you should read this book.
It is called "Generals in Bronze" - it is causing one hell of a stir in civil war americana.

It seems there was a man, the man that did a lot of the bronze work for the union generals - and he kept notes, good notes of the generals he did - what they said. Some rebel generals too.

Those notes were found and they were published.

Off the cuff comments by our leading generals in the civil war - Including Lees kid - OMG,
If you had any doubt war was much more than a political commutation - you should definately read this one. Knock you out of your socks. Civil war purists were decimated.

Mom and dad were officers in WW2. My uncles too - I guess it shouldn't have been so surprising to me. But it was. I think the United States was born then, in 1865 - it is hard to come to terms with the way it happened, at least in some ways. I do understand today why Patch is a footnote in history and Patton got a movie deal. I really do. Anyway, it is a hell of a recollection of those years.

Joe

...the link. Fascinating. Thank you. Just reading the chatter on various boards as revealed through Googling is intriguing.

Thanks.

2. Some things said - particularly by Lees kid - you can't ignore.
I have personally read thru the courtmartial documents of FJ Porter. I Always liked Fitz John Porter. It is one of those crazy things - how can the guy be a great hero in June and a traitor awaiting a firing squad in August?? A general officer of the United States army???

It is something, the whole book - if the US was born anew in 1865 - we should be looking at the thing in detail - I think.

It is a hell of a book, title not withstanding.

Joe
