Some of our fellow DUers need HELP NOW. Let's talk
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 11:19 PM by LibraLiz1973
I started this thread a few days ago
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2890020&mesg_id=2890020

after being inspired by this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2880482&mesg_id=2880482
(Where TAPat succesfully led the charge and raised $1,000 for SS!!)

Those two threads brought alot of issues that our fellow DUers are having out. I really feel that those of us that are able want to help- the problem is that threads eventually fall & since it isn't something that the mods are in on it isn't sticky noted to the top of the page.

Here is a sampling of just a few of our fellow DUers who desperately need our help. What can we do? (Any guidance from Skinner or Elad would be more than welcome- but I understand if you feel you can't officially get involved right now)

Please take the time to read each of their stories.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=5937324&mesg_id=5937366 (mrscorpio)

I know that bobbolink is also BARELY surviving on $603 per month.

WHAT CAN WE DO ???

Here is a link to SS's follow up-it speaks for itself

1. don't know but will go read those and kick this
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 11:01 PM by uppityperson
read and still don't know. I don't have much to share. Am fortunate in having gotten a couple credit cards so am able to survive. Bought 2 cars on credit card to tune of 17% interest, barely able to make payments on them. But we can get to work. Work has dropped off due to recession (yes, there is one) and my medical/health conditions. So. Am glad for credit cards and having married into a house.

Still don't know what to do since I have little to share. Am not maintaining but trying to not charge anything. Even groceries or gas. Good luck and thanks for posting this.

4. thanks. It is odd, but most, well, me, feel that we are doing ok until that last thing
straw that broke the camel's back sort of thing. Balance balance balance, whap. And, in comparison, everyone is doing better than someone, but still, good to help each other because we are all there is a lot of the time. And kick.

at least. As I said it gets hard after a few days because threads eventually start falling.

12. Frankly so many of our members here are in horrible financial shape.
Some don't advertise the fact, some do; How would we know that the funds are actually needed? (Just an honest question :)

20. It's a great question blue bear.
That said...
the 4 people I posted about all have post counts over 1,000. They have clearly been here for a long time & are well known by many here. I know that these are real people, in need. But your right... as this goes forward, it becomes harder to know who your helping. I'm glad you brought it up- it is definately something we all need help with. This is something we all need to work on and be involved with.

24. It does not really matter too much to me
It is the holiday season and I have a little bit to pay forward. It is possible someone might try and scam the board but I would rather help out and take the chance. It might mean everything to someone and if it is not a real need I am not out a horrendous amt of money.

27. When I'm able, this is my exact point of view
When I give, I give freely and don't worry about such things. If someone scams me, I have confidence that the universe will pay them back. No one has scammed me so far so I think my open stance works for me.

ever. Those pages belong in a fairy-tale. I'm going to have to book-mark them for any time I want to look at a miracle. For those who had the courage to ask, and those that had the empathy to give...you have offered me the best examples of human spirit I could ever hope to see. I am sorry I can not contribute. Someone once told me..it's okay to give the shirt off your back if there is one in the closet...closet is bare.

41. I don't know how much many of us can help
If I could, I would, but I, too, am surviving on next to nothing right now ($1000 a month)--thank goodness I have a friend who has been letting me live rent-free, or otherwise I'd be in as deep shit as everyone else. The winter is the worst, though, because of oil costs--this year, fuel assistance essentially covered 1 full tank of 240 gallons, period. If I raise the temperature above 65 degrees or use too much hot water, chances are the months of February and March (and probably half of January as well) will be a lot colder, and there won't be any hot water either.

I don't complain, because there is no point in doing so. At least in Massachusetts, I have health coverage, something I didn't have in Los Angeles. But every place has its own unique challenges, and I have to make the attempt to look forward, and not dwell on everything that goes wrong. I eat relatively cheaply, though I don't get food stamps anymore (I "make" too much money, it seems).

Growing up, I remember that a lot of time was spent on cheap thrills, and we've never had a lot of money in general, so I don't know the difference so much as others might--it seems to me that staying home, watching TV, going online and not having high expectations are all I need to have right now--not that it's likely to change much, but hey, I went for over two months without the computer because I couldn't afford to do anything about it, so it really doesn't make a difference--I'm still alive, I have an active imagination, and I got through that one tough period as best as I could.

I think that one nice thing that could be done is find resources for people who have nothing else. The more resources that are available, the better chance that people will find ways around their dilemmas. It helps to know that people are there, not just for friendship so much, but for someone to understand. I always had people I could rely on and turn to, but now I don't, and that is a worse feeling than living on Top Ramen or Kraft Macaroni and Cheese!

42. You bring up some great points
and I know that TAPat is gathering information on various resources. I will also begin to do the same; it would seem sensible to have at least general information on all 50 states. That way, in a pinch, we would be able to help refer people ASAP.

I hear you about the Top Ramen & Mac n Cheese. I lived on those 2 things plus potatoes (baked, whipped, fried, grated) for a long time.

And don't forget- you have us. We may not be a tactile experience, but, we are HERE and we do care.

All the best-
Liz
