Students Sue After Ovaries Sign Banned
Billboard Removed After Priest Complains

POSTED: 1:58 pm EST December 5, 2006
UPDATED: 2:06 pm EST December 5, 2006

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A group of students sued Rhode Island College on Monday, accusing it of violating their free speech rights by taking down signs that read, "Keep Your Rosaries Off Our Ovaries."

The college's Women's Studies Organization posted the signs near a campus entrance last December amid complaints that some pharmacists had refused to fill prescriptions for contraceptives because of their personal beliefs.

A priest spotted the signs and alerted the president of the college, who ordered them taken down, according to the federal lawsuit.

"The issue is this is a public university, and a public university can't abridge anyone's free speech rights - including the students," said Jennifer Azevedo, an ACLU attorney representing the students.

2. They are MOST DEFINITELY within their rights
to display that sign. Who are these pharmacists to intervene between a doctor and a patient?

3. It will depend what other sorts of signs have been put up and how long...
How this turns out will depend what other sorts of signs
have historically been put up, how long they've remained
up, and who took them down.

We'll see what develops over the next cycle or two...
