Personal products needed for wounded servicemembers at Walter Reed

Officials at Walter Reed Army Medical Center are seeking donations for wounded troops who are forced to leave behind personal belongings when medically evacuated from war zones.

Many of the troops “arrive with nothing,” said officials from the hospital’s Family Assistance Center. Because of the speed with which the most serious wounded are evacuated from Iraq or Afghanistan, their belongings are often left behind and don’t catch up.

So the center is looking for everything from shoes, gloves and winter jackets to postage stamps, prepaid phone cards and razors.

The Family Assistance Center requests that no cash or used items be donated. Among some of the more specialized needs are weightlifting gloves (for use by wheelchair patients); trousers with snaps or zips along the legs; umbrellas; and prepaid gas or grocery cards.

Donations can be sent to:

Walter Reed Army Medical Center
Medical Family Assistance Center
Bldg. 2, 3rd Floor, Room 3E01
6900 Georgia Ave, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 2001

I think that zip is wrong in the story - looking up address on USPS website I got 20307-0004

More information on the donation programs and the medical center can be found at: http://wramc.army.mil/Soldiers/MedFac1/index2.htm

Appreciate if this could get some kicks. And I feel it is abysmal that the damn government can't provide them with what they need.

While I feel for the service members, I think the Bush admin counts on well-meaning folks to come up with money for things like this. It really is the government's responsibility to pay for wars and their consequences. * and his ilk are wasting money that should go to the service members. If the word gets out that service members are really suffering because of the Bushies, there might be consequences for him! Instead, we all send soap and toothbrushes, and he keeps getting away with his shit.

I contribute to the armed forces every quarter, when I send a check to the US Treasury. More than half that money goes to the Pentagon. That they're misusing it is NOT my responsibility.

10. Reminds me of when I was a kid (back in the 40's, the Big War you
know). In school we would bring in shoe boxes with things like toothpaste, brushes, combs, etc. We were rationed back in those days and money to purchase or availability of items was scarce, but everyone participated in that war and we were thrilled to get letters of thanks, etc. I shall put on my bellsouth.net message board, they're generous people. This is sooo important, thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting this!

And...yeah, it gripes me that the public has to do this while Monkey Boy is looking for $500 mil for his LIEBERRY from his rich corporate pals.

16. Thank you, kicking this...
The outrageous number of (severly) injured servicemen and women in Iraq and Afghanistan is one of the saddest results of this war. Despite what we've heard about a lack of body armor, military advances have probably increased a soldier's chances of surviving, but there are many drastic injuries, including head injuries, lost limbs, etc.

War is truly hell. This is a good place to start helping.

I have some memory, lost in the mists of time, of them doing this in WWII or other wars. . . . . .

First they take the children, now they have us pay for the damage they inflicted on our children, just like they have done with Katrina, the tsunami and every other monetary crisis.

22. Maybe george and laura should forgo a couple of those holiday dinners they are hosting
at the WH this year and instead donate that money to the wounded troops at Walter Reed, since george is responsible for putting them there, in the first place. I won't hold my breath.

21. I don't have money to contribute, but I WILL call this toll-free number!
Here's a suggestion...whether you contribute or not, call one of these numbers, ask for the Congresscritter of your choice, and complain that these soldiers, once again, don't have what they need:

1 877 851 - 6437

1 877 762 8762

1 800 828 0498

Write an LTTE with this information, make up little cards to put in the windshield wipers of people with "Support Our Troops" stickers, etc.

This is beyond shameful, and MUST be addressed!
