Jewish school smashed up in Austria, man arrested

Austrian police on Sunday detained a man suspected of breaking into a Jewish community school overnight and systematically smashing windows and porcelain with a crowbar, officials said.

Jewish community leaders denounced the incident as the worst anti-Semitic outburst in Austria for two decades and showed reporters a trail of destruction on all three floors of the Lauder Chabad School in the capital Vienna.

The school, which has 360 pupils from kindergarten to high school-age, was unoccupied and unguarded in the early hours of Sunday. A police spokesman said a man was detained at the scene after residents nearby called in noise complaints to police.

Honestly, when will it be truly safe anywhere for Jewish people? America's about the safest, but like you said... lots of anti-Semites here, too :(

When I was a kid, I realized I and my siblings were "racial ambassadors". No matter whom we meet, or where we go in life, we are the only representatives of our race some people will ever meet. It's up to us to make that encounter a good one. My sibs agree with me now. Every day, when we encounter non-Jews and non-blacks, we strive to go the extra mile and be on our best behavior. We want Muslims and Gentiles who meet us to come away from it thinking, "What a truly extraordinary person that was. This inspires me about the human race." Maybe, too, they might think, "Wow, I didn't know Jews could be cool people like that. I've always heard ____ about them. This just disproved the rule. From now on, I like Jews too."

I guess if there were a life philosophy you could have, that's mine. If I can make a few Muslims, a few Gentiles, a few anti-Semites come away from meeting me with a bigger heart, good job. If I can change anti-black people's minds a little bit and warm their cold hearts, make them kinder towards black people, good job. That's my mission and my philosophy. Gay rights, generation gap, peace, all these things concern me vitally. But as a brown-skinned Jewish girl, gotta say the number one thing on my mind - my prime directive - is the immediate previous paragraph. There, that's my say.

Austria's the country that elected a former SS Officer as its President...bad enough he was also elected to lead the UN as well.

Unfortunately prejudice in all shapes and sizes are "what made America great" and we live in a culture where hate and divisiveness have become political and "communications" tools that draw audience ratings. It's a shame to see synagogues in Chicago that have to hire 24/7 security details now. One doesn't have to go far to see the newer, more hip version of anti-Semetism, it's on display in the I/P forum.

11. Update:

VIENNA - A man in police custody admitted to vandalizing a Jewish school in Vienna, an investigator said yesterday.

The man, whose name has not been released, is probably a Croatian from Zagreb who came to Vienna as a tourist a week ago, said Andreas Krajcsy of the Vienna police's section on state protection and anti-terrorism. Windows at the school were smashed early Sunday. The man is suspected of smashing windows and damaging other objects inside the school.
