Is there any aspect of our society that could be subject to a lack of growth?

If so, which area? What would be the consequences, positive and negative, of such a process?

edit:

For example, the US military. If it were to shrink in scale, would that create more or less conflict around the world? Would other centers of power grow in relation to US power shrinking? Would other countries increase their military to secure their interests? Or would we have a world where war was actually being phased out?

That goes for population, consumption, taxes, government, business, etc, etc.

Poverty is a good topic. Can we ever get rid of poverty, if we continue to have a "middle" class? Wouldn't someone still be in poverty? If there were no poverty class, then the lower part of the middle class would be the poverty class. Unless you brought the wealthy class back down.

I hope that cleared it up a bit. I've always had problems putting the thoughts in my head down on paper(or screen).
