CBS News: President Bush's Bad Reputation
President Bush's Bad Reputation
Around The World, People See The President As An Extension Of America's Arrogance

WASHINGTON D.C., Nov. 26, 2006

(CBS) Just back from Southeast Asia, President George W. Bush will travel to the Middle East this week. But wherever he goes, Bush encounters hostility.

In Southeast Asia, Bush tried very hard to win over his hosts. He played native instruments, watched native dancers and even tried on native clothes. But Bush's earthy diplomacy conducted mid-munch at the G-8 Summit in July or his unsolicited shoulder rub of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, hasn't played well around the world.

From Britain to China, Bush is the "go-it-alone cowboy" to much of the world, leading the United States in the direction he wants, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

"He is too arrogant about the image of the U.S in the world," a young man in Beijing China told CBS White House correspondent Jim Axelrod.

The natural extension of this negative view of Bush in the eyes of the world is a negative view of the U.S. That view is not just isolated to the Muslim world, where 30 percent of Indonesians and Egyptians polled had a negative opinion of the U.S., but to 23 percent of people in Spain. Less than 50 percent of those polled in France, Germany, Russia and China had favorable opinions of the U.S.

2. Then quit letting the f**king asshole go anywhere. I cannot
understand why they didn't pull the plug on his little jaunts a long time ago.

And Cheney too.

3. * is a fish out of water if he can't wow individuals with a slap
on the back, a couple of jokes in bad taste, impatience, followed up with a threat and sudden departure. It worked like a charm to a certain point up to now, but he's hitting a brick wall diplomatically. Texan emotional IQ is not ubiquitous and not welcomed universally.

4. I don't believe those numbers one bit
and am willing to believe they are just made up, for effect..

I think they're the other way around, probably 30% of asia CAN stand him, not having TVs or anything - as for the 50/50 split in Europe, they've been ramming that magic number down our throats here for a LONG time..

50/50 means that everyone's a fence straddler, or can't really make up their minds, or we all hate the other guy, which is bullshit. I don't know anyone that likes Bush, other than clueless middleclass stay at home wives who really believe the tv when it says "A Major Movie Event" on the Woman's network..

Bush is the Ultimate "Ugly American" and should be put off shore for the rest of his life on a floating ship from the 1700's, close enough to see the country, but to never set foot on it again. OR allowed to have MONEY, all of it being given back to charity, or the Treasury.

7. I don't buy any of that myself
Edited on Sun Nov-26-06 12:20 PM by symbolman
but I happen to be in the presence of one such woman, and it's poisoning me, sapping me of my will to live.. my mother in law, it's the holidays and I'm jaded and stuck in an old people's house where the clocks are all dead, they watch Reagan on video tapes that actually WORK after 19 years, and they want to start the rain soaked charcoal with twigs and leaves, asking me why I'm being so difficult when they have No Lighter fluid which they refuse to let me buy, no car but one with no dashboard - when I've been dropped off in the wilds of Alaska by chopper with a piece of string and a length of visquine to live for months before, chased by grizzly bears, etc..

Sorry, the In Laws are driving me nuts, no real offense intended.. :)

11. Mahalo Brah
I'm safe, hanging onto the DU by a toenail, 'borrowing a cup of internet' from the wireless next door, otherwise I'd be bonkers..

the worst thing is it's COLD here!

They call THIS civilization? They can keep it. :)

Yeah, let me keep that sunset in mind we watched all together, and walking down Waikiki Beach while all the buildings over by Diamond Head turned all to GOLD before my eyes, the water like blue velvet on my baby's skin.. after the baby and I swam with dolphins earlier that day..

What bait do you use when fishing for Reason? :)

Shaka Brah!

14. ah, holidays & inlaws
No offense taken - I just didn't know how to put the guy rolling on the floor after my comment. I've always enjoyed your posts - I read a lot on DU, don't post a lot. I think fishing for Reason means remembering, in the midst of families, to keep one holiday of the three (Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years) for yourself - my husband and I always celebrated one by ourselves doing exactly what we wanted to do... helped us survive the other two with our inlaws.

12. its not really good
to insult him by using the term "cowboy." it plays well here. Rule: Can't be a cowboy if you don't ride a horse.
