AL-AWWAMIYA, Saudi Arabia - When the teenager went to the police a few months ago to report she was gang-raped by seven men, she never imagined that the judge would punish her - and that she would be sentenced to more lashes than one of her alleged rapists received.

The story of the Girl of Qatif, as the alleged rape victim has been called by the media here, has triggered a rare debate about Saudi Arabia's legal system, in which judges have wide discretion in punishing a criminal, rules of evidence are shaky and sometimes no lawyers are present.

"The big shock came when the judge sentenced me and the man to 90 lashes each," said the woman. The sentence was handed down as part of the rape trial. Lashes are usually spread over several days, dealt around 50 at a time.

Justice in Saudi Arabia is administered by a system of religious courts according to the kingdom's strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law. Judges - appointed by the king on the recommendation of the Supreme Judicial Council - have complete discretion to set sentences, except in cases where Sharia outlines a punishment, such as capital crimes.

1. So when are we going to "liberate" the Saudis?
Not anytime soon and the picture in your post illustrates that pretty clearly. :grr:

4. It will be right after the 27 pgs of the 911 Report are released naming Saudi Arabia...
... as the financial backer of the 911 hijackers.

The Saudis are playing the same game with Britain right now. Threatening to break diplomatic relations and withhold intelligence from Britain unless Britain ends an investigation that leads directly to bribes and payoffs to the Saudi Royal Family.

There won't be any liberation of Saudi Arabia anytime soon.

3. Absolutely, but we'll have to get oilmen the hell out of
government, both as officials and as fatcat contributors, first.

Islamic law doesn't consider a woman to have been raped unless there are four MALE witnesses. While there were certainly enough male witnesses to this case, I doubt any of them is particularly willing to testify.

90 lashes can be fatal, by the way.

We really need to cut the whole Middle East off, all of them.

13. Poppy took over.
The Harem Masters now share the same hooka with Grand Dragon 41 himself.

So, no, the Sheikdoms aren't leaving anytime soon.

8. Can we stop defending this "culture" now?
Gang rapes seem awfully fucking common in these countries that promote misogynism through their "religion" - is anyone surprised when shit like this happens? Knowing that you can do anything you want to women and SHE will be the one to be punished is pretty much tacit permission for these males to act on any monstrous impulses they might have. Disgusting.

9. These people are really screwed up
Why is this country considered an ally? They have one the worse human rights records in the world, but with all that oil, no one really cares.

11. Why did the rapists rape HIM, too?
It says they raped the dude in the car with her - - WTF is wrong here? I mean, a country is a WHOLE LOTTA WRONG when people willy-nilly rape any sex if they think impropriety is going on..... WHOLE lotta wrong!

(I would like to know if her companion in the car got lashes, too, since he "participated" in extra marital stuff, too.....)

just like there's a difference between fundamentalist 'christians' and actual christianity - so there's a difference between Islam and fundamentalist 'Islam'.
