US Mint annouces: Presidential $1 Coins (all presidents to be included)
United States Mint Unveils Designs of New Circulating Presidential $1 Coins
Historic Change On The Way

Washington, DC — United States Mint Director Edmund C. Moy; Louise Roseman, Director of Reserve Bank Operations and Payments Systems at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve; and other Federal officials provided a first glimpse of a new series of circulating Presidential $1 Coins at a design unveiling ceremony held today at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery. The $1 coins are being introduced as a result of the Presidential Coin Act of 2005, which requires the United States Mint to mint the dollar coins commemorating the service of former United States Presidents in the order in which they served.

Like the United States Mint’s successful 50 State Quarters® Program on which it was modeled, the Presidential $1 Coin Program features a systematically rotating design. The first four $1 coins will commemorate George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

"The new Presidential $1 Coins are an educational and fun way to learn about former Presidents, " said Director Moy. "Our research indicates that, like the 50 State Quarters coins, the Presidential $1 Coins will be popular with millions of Americans."

According to a study commissioned by the United States Mint, about half of all Americans are interested in collecting the Presidential $1 Coins – but their appeal does not end with collecting.

"Congress recognized that the 50 State Quarters Program showed how a systematically changing design can spark public interest in a coin and we’re hoping to build on that success," Director Moy said.

1. Oh God, not more dollar coins
Can't they figure out that dollar bills are just more popular? Our population has never shown any lasting interest in dollar coins, witness the failure of the Sacagawea coin. Man, I don't like dollar coins.

4. Everybody hates dollar coins.
The bottom line is that the dollar coin won't be accepted by the general public until the paper dollar gets phased out. And, frankly, nobody wants to phase out the paper dollar.

10. Size matters.
The last two were too easily confused with the quarter. Can't have a dollar that's smaller than a Kennedy-half.

17. They're a pain in the behind because you can't carry them with the rest of your money
I've learned that the hard way going to school in Canada with one and two dollar coins. Since you can't carry them in your pocket without them rolling out (and who wants to lose two bucks to become "couch change") and you can't carry them in your wallet, I end up having to pay for most things with a five, and use the coins for vending machine purposes or when I know I'm going out to buy something small, like something at Tim Horton's. Otherwise, who wants to lug around five noisy, easy-to-lose coins when you could just have a bill folded up in your wallet? I hope the US never phases out paper ones.

27. Canada has both $1 & $2 coins.
Both are the loonies & toonies popular up there. The recalled the paper dollar and made it worthless after a certain date.

9. Yeah but the state quarters ar a huge hit.
My take on it is that they ought to pay McDonalds and Starbuck something to ditribut them was paret of their change. If people see them in regular circulation they will be used. The key is to get the circulating.

32. That's what I was thinking: this scheme is the only way they can get
Reagan and W on a circulating U.S. coin. Idiots.

yesterday. I think it's a good idea. Having the dollar coins in use can save the tax-payers in the long run.

5. We must kill this program before the Chimp gets on a coin
Otherwise, I'm gonna go to jail repeatedly for hurling them at cashiers who attempt to give them to me as change.

Besides, what would a Bush dollar be worth? Would it be hollow? They would be required to misspell something on the coin, no?

Ok, I'd be cool with it, but only on one condition. On one side, Bush has horns. On the other, he has a normal portrait, framed in the silhouette of Iraq.

33. Been wanting to say this....
"Now I don't mind, I'm choppin' wood
And I don't care if the money's no good..."

The only value that coin might have is to future collectors, and even then, it'll be nearly worthless.

14. A drag, a well-known drag
but living in exile in Canada, I'm now used to not only $1 coins, but $2 coins. There's even talk now about giving rid of the fin for a new $5 coin. Everyone should reinforce the stitching in their pants pockets.

18. I like the dollar coin.
We should also have a two-dollar coin. That way, the smallest bill would be a fiver.

Our Canadian friends figured this out a long time ago, and they seem to get by on loonies and twonies.

That said, I scarcely can wait for that Millard Fillmore buck. That'll be a hell of a day.

I agree - it's well past the time when we should have moved to a $1 coin. Terrible waste of tax dollars to have to keep printing a supply of $1 bills.

20. they keep trying dollar coins because the paper dollars lifetime is very short
dollar coins would save a mint. :)

if they were really serious they would just phase out the paper dollars and force us to get used to the coins. wed get over it before too long.

vending machines. I am tired of looking in my wallet thinking I have some money, only to find out at the food kiosk, they are only dollar bills. I am ready for the real dollar coins.

They have tried for years to get Reagan on the $10 bill but could not accomplish it, so this is the next best thing for them.
