I'm really not. I don't expect them to pull out of NAFTA or CAFTA, although I wish they'd at least talk about globalization in a real way, not least because I think the country is ready for that discussion. I know they're not going to touch gay civil rights with a ten-foot pronouncement, although it's obviously the right thing to do. I don't even expect them to do much of anything with the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind, even though that law is ruining American education.
But I do expect something. A substantial hike in the minimum wage will be a nice start. A host of other issues awaits - alternative energy, poverty, health care for starters. And, of course, there's Iraq.
For the five years I've been on DU, I've been saying that, when and if we regained power, those wringing their hands back then about the idea that we might actually do something (lest we remain powerless) would continue wringing their hands about the idea that we might actually do something (lest we lose our hold on power). Sure enough.
A minimum wage hike will be a nice start. But if we never get beyond that - if the GOP can run things for six years and run the country off the cliff and our big response once we get to run a few things is that one thing - then what was all that about?
