Let Al Gore Inspire You Today
Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 10:50 AM by RestoreGore
Below is the review I wrote of the movie, An Inconvenient Truth, the day after seeing it when it opened in my state on June 2, 2006. I remember that as I walked into the movie theatre I was filled with emotion because this man I have loved and supported for 17 years had finally been able to break through the partitions that had surrounded him regarding this issue. He had finally gotten a chance to show his soul and deliver a crucial message that had been ignored in years past, and this movie is Al Gore's soul, and this truth is real.

And while to some it may seem like this crisis is one that leads to despair, it is not. I too have a fervent hope in my heart that the goodwill, common sense, and morality of people will take hold and that we will finally see what our actions are doing to Gaia, Mother Earth, and take action. That we will finally be able to look beyond the political pretense and do the right thing for ourselves, our children, their children, and our most beloved home.

I had a love for this Earth instilled in me at a very young age that I have carried with me all of my life, by a woman who is no longer on this Earth but who embodied a pure love for this planet and passed it on to me. That woman was my mother, who like Mr. Gore's sister died of cancer. The pain of her death at seventeen has stayed with me and in essence is what drives me to be relentless in my pursuit of bringing this information to others, as well as my love for my child and my family. I will not sit silently and allow Mother Nature to be betrayed by our actions, and besides that inspiration being given to me by my mother, I also find inspiration and hope in Mr. Gore's message.

He is now an inspiration for an entire new generation of youth that needs to see the relationship between us and this planet and how wonderful and awe inspiring that relationship is. They need to see nature, work the land, be a part of this Earth, and be made aware of what their actions do to make the world they and their children will have as they grow older and how those actions affect not only them but all other species that share this planet with us. I can think of no other person who can do that than Al Gore.

Today, An Inconvenient Truth on DVD is released. This is now an opportunity for everyone to take it upon themselves to be climate crusaders. Watch the film and let it move you to personal action. Let it move you to seeking and arming yourself with the knowledge you need to do the moral thing. Let it inspire you to help other groups with this mission. Give it to someone you love and share it with them. Donate a copy to your local school board or municipal government and arrange to have free showings of it in your town. Donate it to your church, or simply share it in private with friends. Just please, do something.

A line from the famous Beatles' album Abbey Road goes, " The love you take is equal to the love you make." That also holds true for the resources of this planet and the love we take and make regarding her. It is time to give back. Let today be the day you start.
Thank you.

My review:

I had a front row seat in a packed theatre to see Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth last night. I can describe it in two words: a journey. It is Al Gore's journey of heart, soul, spirit, and mind through a lifetime of stewardship and also growth. For as much as this movie is a clarion call to all of us to now take our own journey for our planet, ourselves, and our children, it is also Al Gore's reckoning with himself. He lays his soul bare to warn us of the consequences of our inaction now regarding this crisis, because it relays to the events in his own life in the past that brought him to this point as well.

The scenes showing his early years in Congress, his son's car accident, the 2000 election (yes, I cried here,) and the very poignant scenes of him with his sister Nancy who died of lung cancer revealed to me a man not doing this out of any selfish political intent, but of a man who is telling you, the viewer, that even he has had to experience loss and near loss in his life in order to realize what he lost and how much of a part he played in it. I think those scenes were shown in direct correlation to this climate crisis and his message that we must not make the same mistake now with our planet.

Will we look back years from now regretting that we continued the very behavior that is contributing to this crisis even knowing what it is doing to our planet? Or will we take the necessary steps to change our ways and heed the warnings before it is too late? That is the question of this movie and there is no alarmism whatsoever in the presentation of the solutions we have at our disposal. Mr. Gore relays the facts starkly, calmly, and at times humorously, and clearly lays out what we can do to mitigate this crisis. And the scientific consensus cannot be denied that we as a species are contributing to it and it is having a definite effect on our world.

His statistics on Co2, invasive species, species loss, ice cap melting, population growth, etc., intertwined with footage from around the world showing the effects of the statistics he showed was all very well presented and backed up. I also never got the impression that any of this is about him in any other sense than him using himself as an example of someone who had to reach the bottom in order to reach for the top.

I laughed, I cried, and I saw before me on the screen a man who has surely come full circle with who he is and what his mission is, and that is handing that mission and truth to us. He says he is not a hero, and frankly, I didn't see a hero in this movie and that is a good thing. Heroes have a tendency to be placed on pedestals and forgotten. I saw something much more. I saw a prophet, a missive, and a trailblazer who has full faith in our abilty to save our planet. And we must not let our planet down, and that also includes those in government and the corporate world whose indifference to this issue can no longer be tolerated.

This is a movie that will make you see the world in a whole new light. And you must see it. And you must make sure those you love see it, especially your children. My teenage son watched this movie with me, and after it I asked what he learned from it. He said it told him that it was time to wake up and do something. I say, amen to that.

So thank you Al Gore, Davis Guggenheim, Laurie David, Lawrence Bender, Jeff Skoll, Paramount Classics, and Participant Productions for giving us this journey to now guide us on the greatest challenge we will ever face. And we will face it, because we must. And whether you even like Al Gore or not is not the point, for this in no way is a partisan political movie. The point is that this world belongs to all of us, and unless we learn to see the slow boil we will surely reap the consequences. It truly is a moral issue. So do I recommend this movie? Yes, with every fiber of my being. It is truthful, concise, and in my opinion surely Oscar worthy.

And as the credits rolled, I noticed that there was not the usual rush to get out of the theatre. People continued to sit watching the credits and listening to Melissa Etheridge sing...then it went quiet. That was when I stood up and clapped exclaiming, 'Thank you, Al Gore!'... and the entire theatre then clapped with me, and it felt good, for I too had waited a long time to be able to show this man the depth of the gratitude I have for him. Now it is up to us to continue to spread his inspirational and crucial message where it left off in the theatre. May we have the strength and will to do so.

Gore's 'Truth' is warming, indeed
Critics' picks: New DVDs
Originally published November 19, 2006

Panasonic Home Video / $29.99

An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore's documentary about the perils of global warming, wears its tree-hugging credentials proudly on its 100 percent-recycled sleeve. The DVD is encased in a thin little cardboard jacket, in keeping with its admonition to consumers to "avoid products with a lot of packaging" to cut down on carbon dioxide emissions.

The inner jacket urges buyers of the DVD to, "Watch it. Share it. Donate it. Illegally download it." OK, we made up that last one. Nonetheless, it's easy to get the feeling that the former vice president would secretly approve all measures -- this side of the law, of course -- that will get his message out to as broad a spectrum of the public as possible.

Potential viewers might be put off by the prospect of being lectured to for 96 minutes by a past presidential candidate, armed with flow charts, who is notorious for his wooden delivery. That would be a shame, for An Inconvenient Truth is an improbable, thoughtful charmer. Gore comes across in the DVD (being released Tuesday) as that rarest of breeds -- a politician with little personal ego who has devoted his life to serving a cause that he sees as bigger and more important than him and his brilliant career.

Indeed, Gore appears almost humble when he describes his bewildered pain at his failure to get his message across and convince Congress to adopt more stringent environmental protections. If only he could have been more articulate, more forceful, more persuasive, perhaps more people would have heeded his call. He is forthright about his own blind spots; it took his sister's death from lung cancer for him to put an end to the tobacco farming business in which the Gore family had been involved for generations.

Not that watching An Inconvenient Truth is an entirely pleasant experience. The film's graphic depiction of the consequences, if the world continues on its current rapacious course, is unsettling and alarming. The upside is that the movie may inspire viewers to make changes, however minor, to their lifestyles.

4. Mr. Gore's Remarks About DVD Release
"I'm excited about the documentary's release on DVD," Gore said in an interview. "The DVD is a vital way for us to continue the conversation about global warming with even more Americans. As more and more people understand what's at stake, they become a part of the solution, and share both in the challenges and opportunities presented by the climate crises."

I sure hope he's right.

7. Excellent idea...
Schools, libraries, universities, rotary clubs, are all good places to donate copies. And people can take it upon themselves to show this to others if they are so inclined, because that is the message of the movie... to empower us.

An Inconvenient Truth
Paramount // PG // $29.99 // November 21, 2006

Review by Preston Jones

The Movie

To paint An Inconvenient Truth as anything less than what it is -- a near clarion call to action -- would be to slight former Vice President of the United States Al Gore's seemingly indefatigable need to alert everyone within earshot of his voice about the mounting dangers of global warming. Why this film, directed by Davis Guggenheim, succeeds where so many others have fallen short, is that Gore never strikes the viewer as anything other than rational, collected and impassioned. He's not alarmist, he's not half-crazed about melting glaciers or raging forest fires -- he's merely sad and determined, armed with facts and figures and set upon making some sort of positive impact.

With a relentless torrent of scientific data at his fingertips (and a "Futurama" clip or two), broken down into easily digestible and understood chunks, Gore lays out the past, present and downright harrowing future of our globe, as it continues to reel from the effects of our callous hyper-consumption. One chilling statistic after another (often backed up with stunning photographic evidence) piles up until you're left, shaken and unnerved, as the credits roll, listing several ways you yourself can engage in making a difference.

Woven into the fabric of An Inconvenient Truth is an informal biography of Gore himself, following his journey from the family farm in Tennessee to the halls of power in Washington to his globe-trotting adventures as an eco-missionary. These interludes punctuate his presentation, offering respite from the dizzying amount of information, but also deftly providing insight into why he pursues this avocation so devotedly. It's a trick that could've very well failed, dragging down the otherwise essential message of An Inconvenient Truth, but Guggenheim seamlessly integrates this necessary information into his overall narrative.

There's not much more I can say about An Inconvenient Truth that you won't discover for yourself when you sit down to watch it -- it lays out in plain, unfiltered language precisely what we are doing and why our planet is in crisis. It's sobering, terrifying and more than a little depressing, but you're left with a feeling of possibility, rather than dread inevitability. An Inconvenient Truth is an important, powerful and necessary film -- it's one that connects like few others in 2006 and one places the onus of action upon you, the viewer. How you feel upon the film's conclusion is much less important that what you will do -- having the courage to take action can be the hardest step, but also the most rewarding. (A portion of the proceeds from the DVD's sales will benefit the bipartisan climate effort The Alliance for Climate Protection and the filmmakers point those in search of more detailed information to the Web site www.climatecrisis.net.)

The DVD

The Video:

Filmed on HD video and Super 16, An Inconvenient Truth doesn't look quite as sharp as it could in its 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer -- instances of grain, smearing and slight noise mar an otherwise very clean and sharp-looking image. Particularly when the camera swoops in close upon Gore's Apple-fueled slideshow, you can see the fuzziness of letters and softness of photos. There's nothing overly distracting about the few flaws, but they are present nonetheless.

The Audio:

I had to crank the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack a bit above normal to make out what Gore was saying; for some reason, the whole audio track was pitched at a lower volume -- not unintelligible, just a lot lower than where most DVDs are set. Despite the volume issue, Gore's dire warnings about global warming are heard cleanly and free of drop-out throughout the film. A Dolby 2.0 stereo track is included, as are optional English, French and Spanish subtitles.

The Extras:

The packaging itself is a bonus here -- made from 100% post-consumer recycled material and sliver-thin, it features "Ten Things to Do" on the inside flap, with the disc tucked snugly in a sleeve on the opposing flap. A pair of commentary tracks --one with Guggenheim and the other stitched together with appearances from producers Laurie David, Lawrence Bender, Scott Z. Burns and Lesley Chilcott -- easily cover the background and technical information about the making of the film, as well as their collective passion for the project. In lieu of a commentary track, Gore contributes a 32 minute, 17 second "update," presented in anamorphic widescreen and outlining all that has transpired since the film's completion in late 2005. The 11 minute, seven second "The Making of 'An Inconvenient Truth'" is presented in anamorphic widescreen and rendered somewhat redundant by the commentary tracks, with the music video for Melissa Etheridge's "I Need To Wake Up" rounding out the disc.

Final Thoughts:

An Inconvenient Truth is an important, powerful and necessary film -- it's one that connects like few others in 2006 and one places the onus of action upon you, the viewer. How you feel upon the film's conclusion is much less important that what you will do -- having the courage to take action can be the hardest step, but also the most rewarding. Don't miss this film. Highly recommended.

13. Spread the truth
<sigh> I thought I would have my copy of AIT to watch over this weekend, but it isn't being shipped for another week and a half... maybe that's because I bought multiple copies. Anyway, a good idea for those who support this movie would be to buy two or three and donate one to your local school system or library. If we are going to get the word out we have to do it now.

To date I have given out about 150 flyers to people since the movie premiered , and when I do I ask them a couple of questions to get an idea of what they know. So far people seem to have heard about global warming, but they don't understand what causes it and how they fit in. That is why it is so important to get this movie out to as many places as possible where it is accessible to people!
