Why are fundies so weird?
First there's this thread about fundie weirdness:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2735818

Well, research shows that married people have sex more often, so I guess that's why they get divorced. They have sex too often. So following the comandment to be fruitful and replenish the Earth is bad, bad, bad because you'll run out of love because you have sex too often. And our bodies know who we're having sex with and change our hormone output accordingly, so we run out of love quicker when we have sex with different people.

Then there's the craziness about the Jesus dolls. And the Jesus camps where kids are forced to pray in front of Bush effigies. And the ministers who buy gay sex and lie about it (because he doesn't want the gay to get beaten out of him?).

What makes the fundies so crazy WEIRD? Are they topping their morning nut bran with heavy duty drugs, or what? Are the bible printers using the "special" ink laced with LSD?

I hope it's not contagious.

1. I think it's because their doctrines deny and condemn everything that
makes us human; this is true as far as I can tell of every variety of fundamentalism. And if you go through life believing that everything about your essential humanity has to be rejected because it's Sinful, it has to warp your mind.

That's my theory, anyway.

2. I've never met anyone who bases their life a giant leap of faith..
Who wasn't "weird", or smart, or creative, or logical. That goes for any leap of faith, religious or not.

3. What's wrong with being weird?
I support everybody's right to be as weird as they wish. And they are free to share their weirdness with any other consenting adult (or adults). As long as they don't interfere with my weirdness, I don't care.

6. please.......
don't give LSD a bad name. If the fundies W O U L D take some, I would bet their world's would change over night. Heightened awareness usually leads to enlightenment, unless of course they are a weak person who crumbles easily when they find the core of their beliefs being questioned by their own consciences. Somewhere in all that the real face of god is showing, not the uptight, bigoted, fearful one they already know.

7. They live in a world of delusions
and do everything they can to ignore or deny reality, when reality doesn't agree with their fantasy version of the world.

8. Their perceived reality is nothing like yours or mine.
While that can be said be true of everyone to a certain extent, fundamentalists have accepted a number of things that seem to contradict consensual reality as we know it. Remember HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey? Same kind of thing.

9. Well look at what they have to believe
Firstly that the King James Translation of the Bible is the only version of the Bible that is inerrant. Other translations are flawed because the KJV was divinely inspired; what is more all the sources that were used by King James' scholars are flawed because they are less divinely inspired than the KJV. Modern translators are not divinely inspired so where they differ from the KJV they are wrong etc etc duh

Secondly they have to believe that the whole universe that we see was created entirely for the use of one miniscule speck that is Earth. That all the evidences of deep time on earth and off it were created to provide a "test of faith" (excuse me but doesn't that make God a liar?).

Thirdly .... I'll leave it for the moment, this subject is one of my rant triggers

10. Since I have to deal with these people every day, lemme tell ya'
It's all about fear. They're sure if everything isn't tightly buttoned down, the world will go spinning out of control. Satan is working through everybody and everything to get them. Nobody can be trusted to be good on his/her own. Everybody will do the most vile and venal things if they don't have the fear -and I mean fear, not love - of God in them. Even babies are born evil.

If you want to see just how sick it can get, check out nogreaterjoy.org or the Ezzo's site, whatever that is. These people talk about spanking infants. INFANTS. Because they say wee babies are manipulative and need to be disciplined and taught to fear their parents. One of the books recommends laying a 4 month old on his back and tucking blankets to pin him in place, then BAM! repeatedly whapping a stick on the bed on either side of him. They buy wooden paddles on a cord so they can hang it around their necks and have it handy because those 14 kids God told them to have need to be beaten into submission regularly.

So the answer is yes, they're crazy.
