CNN: "US troops caught in the middle of a Civil War."
Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 05:07 PM by Bluebear
"All out war" says the crawl line banner.

US-backed government issues arrest warrant for major Sunni cleric leader...and US troops are suddenly in even graver danger today than yesterday.

And Bush plays the xylophone.

4. They have little choice but to admit it.
This move by the government is to decapitate the only semblance of leadership the Sunnis there have. It sends a message that any Sunni leader, from top to bottom, is a suspected or actual terrorist.

8. Well, it's been just a little over a week since the Dems took power
so it was natural that the Iraq occupation went straight to Hell in such a short period of time ...

17. That canard won't work, since the Dems won't control Congress til January.
The 'Pubs will try it, though.

6. This is the Elephant in the Room
Glad CNN finally mentioned it.

Anti-US violence is best solved by a quick US withdrawal. But Sunni-Shiite violence may be ignited by that same withdrawal unless something changes, such as an agreement with neighboring countries and insurgent leaders themselves.

There is plenty of incentive on all sides. All parties have something to fear. Sunnis fear Shiite dominance and loss of oil revenue, and cannot possibly hope to dominate the country as they did under Saddam. Shiites fear for Shiite minorities outside the South and their unified government being taken down. Insurgent leaders on both sides fear domination by the pro-Western faction of their own groups as much as they do other ethnic groups. Iran and Syria fear chaos on their borders, and Saudi Arabia fears militant Wahhabism contesting their own government.

I still think Gates' job is to anoint the next Saddam who will turn the lights back on so we can get out like winners.
