A Reminder ....
Amendment 1
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
(December 15, 1791)

For two hundred and fifteen years, Amendment 1 has been widely recognized as one of the most essential building blocks of democracy. And at no time in our nation's history has it been more important than today.

In the last ten days, I've advocated that progressive democrats support the call for Congressional investigations of the Bush-Cheney administration's activities that have led us to war in Iraq. There are a wide range of opinions among members of the Democratic Underground, and that's a good thing. I urge people, no matter what their views are, to take advantage of the opportunities the '06 elections have provided, and to exercise those Constitutional Rights defined in Amendment 1.

The elections marked an important series of victories for all democrats. We need to continue to work for progress. Celebrate Amendment #1's birthday by writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper; call in to C-SPAN; and call/write/e-mail your elected officials in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Petition the government for a redress of grievances.

"...You say you'll change the constitution
well, you know
we all want to change your head. ...."
-- John Lennon; Revolution

Honor the Constitution of the United States of America. Impeach Dick Cheney.

6. Chris Matthews
on MSNBC again asked a couple democrats if they plan to use the power of the supoena to find out if the administration lied us into war, and what things the administrations is trying to hide on this. It interests me that though a lot of DUers mock Matthews, he is taking the progressive stance on this. Of course, Matthews knows what Cheney did.

9. He knows? The only thing about Matthews is he keeps repeating
that GOP talking point about "the Dems have no plan for Iraq" - for pete's sake, it's only been a week, and we aren't even in power yet, and BTW what in the heck is the Republican plan for Iraq?

Sorry, I'll get off that soap box. I would hope that the Democrats would investigate I know that there is this "impeachment is off the table" conversation which I am not giving too much credence to right now, since it's too early and the investigations haven't even started.

15. Yep.
Matthews has been hammering on the OVP for some time now. Matter of fact, it's why Scooter called Tim Russert in the summer of 2003 -- to complain about Matthews' reporting on the OVP's role in bringing us to war in Iraq.

"Honor the Constitution of the United States of America. Impeach Dick Cheney."

Short and pithy... I like it!

BTW, I'm printing out your earlier essay:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=2659066

.. and giving it to people, with the strong suggestion to read and digest. All the misinformation that exists on DU, other people are getting in the corporate media, and I thought your essay the best way to counteract said misinformation.

I made a bunch of wrappers I put on little candies that say "impeachMINT" on it, so they get a little treat, and a chuckle.

With any luck, they'll read it, think about it, pass it on to others, and start discussions.

Thanks for all the effort you put into these essays of yours!

:applause:

16. I honestly believe...
What Waxman needs to focus on initially is Dick Cheney and Halliburton. Probe those two and you start unraveling the whole ball of yarn. I do plan on writing to Waxman. Not this weekend, but before January 20, he will be hearing from me, and plenty of it.

"While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the (vice ;))president of the united states
Sometimes must have
To stand naked."

23. I'll join you. One good letter deserves another!
Just remember that if you're planning a snail letter (which is a good idea), to allow plenty of time. Thanks to the anthrax crap, it now takes about a month or two to get a letter to the House of Representatives.

I hope there are many more who see this and write to Waxman, because I think you're right on target.

Personally, I can't think of any other "public servant" who has exhibited more contempt for the American people ... or perhaps for any people.

He has abused his position and is responsible, with Jr., for the deaths of hundreds of thousands. To NOT act to address the injustice done will cause us immense difficulty for the next 50 years internationally. This moment defines the America we will be known for from this point forward. This administration has trashed our reputation as a democracy. The world is watching what a premiere democracy does to regulate itself when its leaders fail. To do nothing is not an option.

And, just because I think this is one of the most appalling interviews (ABC's This Week with GS 11/5/06) ever done given Cheney's arrogance in saying that it doesn't matter what the American people or Congress want in Iraq... that he and * have a plan for Iraq that **they** think is right and that's what will be followed according to him. For those that haven't seen this, I found this to be one of the most frightening interviews that I hope to ever see. Cheney needs to go.

18. There's nothing to "investigate"
The regime admits and "defends" clearly impeachable offenses -- like illegal spying and violating Geneva.

The "investigations" question is whether to hold "impeachment hearings" or "open-ended fact-finding hearings" on specific matters (that may or may not lead to impeachment charges).

Doing the former (while not even "required") could well be helpful to bringing more of the public (already a majority) and even Republicans back into the reality-based community where impeachment is imperative to defend the Constitution and begin to Redeem Our National Soul. Doing the latter displays weakness and sends the message that there is some uncertainty about the ongoing reality that is staring us in the face.

That is why the "off the table" comment is so damaging. It is a self-defeating prophesy regardless of whether or not there's some "strategery" behind it.

If you don't broach the accusation, you garner zero attention.

20. Bush/Rove/Cheney never play softball
They lie blatantly and competently enough to call off the dogs. They talk bipartisanship, but notice that Bush renominates some extreme judges and has no plans for change in Iraq. They are masters of deception, and I cannot believe how the established legislators on both sides are willing to kiss and make up.

There is no making up. These guys belong in prison for their crimes against humanity, not to mention acts of treason. The constitution is still at risk and every day Bush and Cheney are destroying it. This election has not fundamentally loosened their grip on power. It is not time to sit back and rest.

21. It's all going to work out
if we keep exercising our First Amendment rights, and our Democratic chairpersons due their Constitutional duties to excercise oversight.

I believe the conclusion will follow naturally from that.
