As JABBS noted last month, Congressional conservatives had set the earlier termination date at the behest of the Bush administration, presumably to remove the source of a series of audit reports that have been critical of the administration's efforts.

At the time, it was clear that Democrats -- who support such fact-finding missions over empty conservative spin that money is being spent wisely -- supported the inspector general, Stuart W. Bowen, Jr.

1. This is great news
With this bunch of fascists running things, Inspectors General are the only thing keeping them honest. The IGs at FDA and USDA have hammered the agencies for defying real science to play politics and absolutely humiliated USDA for covering up a case of mad cow disease. The IG there, Phylis Fong, consistently goes after them, and they end up having to admit she's right. With Dems running committees next year, watch for a BUNCH of this skullduggery to be exposed.

2. agreed
this should have been a no-brainer, but it took the prospect of Democratic control of the Senate to make the decision popular again. It got shot down when Collins pushed it last month.
