So long ago, so far away
For some reason, listening to this song makes me want to cry. We've lost so very much as a nation. Will we ever get it back?
---

The Immigrant
Neil Sedaka

Harbors open their arms to the young searching foreigner
Come to live in the light of the big L of liberty
Plains and open skies billboards would advertise
Was it anything like that when you arrived?
Dream boats carried the future to the heart of America
People were waiting in line for a place by the river

It was time when strangers were welcome here
Music would play- they tell me the days were sweet and clear
It was a sweeter tune and there was so much room
That people could come from everywhere

Now he arrvies with his hopes and his heart set on miracles
Come to marry his fortune with a hand full of promises
To find they've closed the door- they don't want him anymore
There isn't anymore to go around
Turning away he remembers he once heard a legend
That spoke of a mystical magical land called America

There was time when strangers were welcome here
Music would play- they tell me the days were sweet and clear
It was a sweeter tune and there was so much room
That people could come from everywhere

There was time when strangers were welcome here
Music would play- they tell me the days were sweet and clear
It was a sweeter tune and there was so much room
That people could come from everywhere.

1. Moving
considering that Time just ran an article on the population of America and as it turns out we still have a lot of room left, except some (now a minority) dont like to share.

2. moving, yes, but I don't wanna share
I like things in my world how they are, and don't want big changes. That's not so awful, is it?

5. ahh.. no disrespect meant
i assumed something to this effect. I remember reading the other day that we just declared English as our offical language, i'm not certain if this is true or not, but i felt a sence of loss. I hear this kind of anti-immigrant dribble at work a lot. We shouldn't have spanish on our atms or on our signs...blah blah blah. I can't help but ask them "we live in the greatest nation on earth with arguably access to one of the best education systems, college wise, available, so why can't we just learn more then one language? I read somewhere that people claimed english was our melting pot and i just think, bullshit, its the people stupid. Sorry for the rant.
