It's time to give up and move on. 65.64%

Good strategy, the race could still turn around. 34.36%

7. Me too.
To be fair - doesn't matter if he is a whack job. If he wants a recount, he should get one.

5. He's Nothing But A Right Wing Political Shill !
I've listened to Hayworth bloviate on Imus, CNN, and MSNBC. Having done so, I agree with what the Arizona paper said about him. He's a bully in the same vein as admitted liar Rush Limbo. Say anything, carry any water, endlessly repeat all the RW talking points, regardless of merit.

His arguments were so inane on Imus, that Imus finally told him "get off my phone" with that garbage. He never returned.

Anyone who has read about Hayworth's activities as he tries to cling to power needs to stop drinking the kool-ade. No need to grieve for that TV announcer/sportscaster turned political shill.

8. agreed, glad to see him go... BUT
I want a long-standing precedent of counting and recounting votes in close races. Next elections are that far off... and each close race where a dem might lose... I want those votes counted.

I would pretty much venture to guess that Blowhard Hayworth is done politically - the votes don't appear to be there for him. But for the cause of election integrity, now and in the future... go ahead and count the votes.

25. It's Not A Close Race! Here's The Link.....
http://www.nytimes.com/ref/elections/2006/House.html

If Allen couldn't pick up 7,000 votes statewide, exactly how is Hayworth going to pick up 6,000 in a single district. Ain't gonna happen unless Diebold is doing the recount.

Mitchell hopes lead over Hayworth holds up

Nov. 12, 2006 12:00 AM

Congressional hopeful Harry Mitchell's lead over Rep. J.D. Hayworth remained at nearly 6,000 votes as ballot counting extended into its fifth day.

Mitchell heads to Washington today for orientation sessions. The Democratic challenger of six-term Republican Hayworth has made no claim of victory, but he appointed a former congressman to help him prepare for setting up offices if he wins.

Hayworth, who had 75,163 votes to Mitchell's 80,820 by Saturday afternoon, said has said he intends to wait until every ballot is counted. Even if Hayworth concedes, all remaining ballots from the 5th Congressional District would be tallied.

Edit to fix link

12. If there are more than 6000 uncounted votes.. recount them
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 01:16 PM by SoCalDem
If there are a few hundred, it won't matter, but they still should be counted for OTHER votes on issues/candidates that MIGHT be affected.

I don;t understand why anyone would prefer that only "some" voted get counted, and others do not.

13. There seems to be a lot of confusion about this issue: CLARIFICATIONS
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 01:53 PM by Coventina
ALL THE VOTES WILL BE COUNTED!

This issue is not about counting votes or not counting votes. The votes are being counted as we speak. Each day brings an updated tally.

The issues are:

Does Hayworth have a chance in hell of winning fairly?

Answer: NO!

He has been behind CONSISTENTLY by about 5700-6000 votes.

What is happening is that Maricopa county (one of the largest in the country) had about 250,000 early and provisional ballots dumped on them on election day. They all have to be hand-verified. (Once verified they are scanned optically).

Only about 25,000 votes can be hand-verified per day. This is why it is dragging on so long.

BUT! Only a SMALL proportion of those 250,000 ballots are from CD 5!!!

This means that Hayworth has to carry the remaining votes to be counted by AT LEAST a 2:1 margin. A NEAR STATISTICAL IMPOSSIBILITY!!!!!!!

But the longer this race is held in "suspense" (which it isn't really) it builds plausibility for stealing it.

I DO NOT TRUST THE AZ SOS OR THE COUNTY RECORDER!!!!!!!! They are both Republicans who have CONSTANTLY said "it's too early to call" and "we can't know a winner yet"

This means one of TWO THINGS: either they are STUPID or they are trying to steal it for Hayworth!!!!!!!!!!

WE NEED TO TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY FOLKS!!!

on edit: so angry, can't type correctly

21. SoS Brewer and Cty Rec. Purcell are RRR operatives from waaaay,
way back.

Since the vote hinges on Maricopa County, the fume alarm is on ELEVEN.

Purcell has nothing to lose (near retirement) and she's been an RRR operative from waaaaaay back--in fact, RUMOR* has it her candidacy for the post was something of a "thank you" from the state party.

*emphasis on RUMOR

24. If that's what he wants to do, that's fine with me.
There's almost zero chance that he will prevail, but only he (and his campaign staff) have the right to make this decision.

That's why I wasn't too upset by Allen's and Burns' original intent to let the count ride itself out before conceding. I was secretly hoping for Allen to go for a recount, even if that postponed our celebrations. After all, what's the hurry? A recount would likely highlight all sorts of bad Repuke stuff. That's not what happened.

Now, if JD wants to wait, that's okay with me. We'll still get the seat.
