...schedules a quick vote in the Senate at the last minute on some important issue at the exact same time as the fundraiser which will force McCain to cancel out the appearance to run back to DC for the vote just like the Repubs did to our candidates during the last presidential election when they ran everything.

1. McCain will keep to his schedule, rake in the $$$
What's a maverick to do? Never fear, good ole Bill Cheney will be there to pick up the tie-breaking slack if needed, provided he's not out of town on one of his lethal hunting expeditions.

2. Cheney is not the tie breaking vote in the Senate
The Dems control the Senate now. Cheney is out of the picture.

5. For purposes of establishing leadership that's very true.

And I wish Cheney was 100% out of the picture. However, if a Senate vote is tied, 50-50, or 49-49 or whatever, the VP can still cast the deciding vote. It's part of the secondary role of V.P. as being "President of the Senate", which does not depend on which party holds the majority.

From the U.S. Senate website:

According to the Constitution of the United States, "The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided" (Article I, Section 3). Since 1789, the vice president has cast 242 tie-breaking votes. The first vice president, John Adams (pictured), still holds the record, having broken a tie in the Senate 29 times during his two terms in office. Our current vice president, Richard Cheney, has cast six tie-breaking votes.

6. Let McCain try and explain why he missed some "support the troops" vote then
He will have to say he was too busy out raising money. Didn't have time for the vote. That will sound good. Won't it?
