Governing Without Parental Supervision"There are only two choices: A police state in which all dissent is suppressed or rigidly controlled; or a society where law is responsive to human needs. If society is to be responsive to human needs, a vast restructuring of our laws is essential. Realization of this need means adults must awaken to the urgency of the young people’s unrest—in other words there must be created an adult unrest against the inequities and injustices in the present system." -- Justice William Orville Douglas
American voters chased the Loser-in-Chief back home to the arms of his daddy after months-long rampage where he was working hard at bullying the nation's Democrats from the elevation of the people's house. All the while, our nation's soldiers were needlessly wasting away in Iraq, fighting and dying as a political prop for his cynical war campaign of fear and smear.
Daddy Bush and his concierge, James Baker, have taken Junior back under their wing and have apparently convinced the adult adolescent to stop playing with the nations resources and defenses, and to put the government back together again. The first major step was the dismissal of the one man in Bush's cabinet who everyone agrees has failed miserably. Over 2800 American soldiers killed in Iraq over the course of a three year occupation attests to that unacceptable failure.
The Executive loser's explanation for Rumsfeld's dismissal revealed the dishonesty and manipulation that has characterized the entire military posture of their occupation of Iraq. At the first news conference Bush held after the stunning reversal of his political fortunes, he was asked how much the dismissal had to do with the election results. Bush was all weak and submissive after the dressing-down from daddy. Tell you what, Bush answered, I was just bluffing when I told the American people during the election that they were going to die in a devastating wave of terrorist violence if I fired the most important architect of the glorious, eventual victory in the new demorepublic of Iraqikurdsunnishiastan.
"Right," Bush told the reporters, "No, you and Hunt and Keil came in the Oval Office (
remember?), and Hunt asked me the question one week before the campaign, and basically it was, are you going to do something about Rumsfeld and the Vice President? And my answer was, they're going to stay on. And the reason why is I didn't want to inject a major decision about this war in the final days of a campaign. And so the only way to answer that question and to get you on to another question was to give you that answer."
Classic. It should go down in history as the most blatant, the most pernicious lie since . . . since the last time Bush lied during his SOTU address, scaring the nation with warnings about atomic mushroom clouds coming from nuclear weapons built out of Saddam's aluminum tubes. How many other 'questions' about the stewardship of the offices of our government has Bush blatantly lied to the American people about to "get us on to another question?" What other "major decisions" are being delayed because of his cynical politics? What else did he confess to his daddy?
"I had been talking with Don Rumsfeld over a period of time about fresh perspective," Bush said. "He likes to call it
fresh eyes."
Bush's concierge' Baker, who convinced Bush to nominate the Iran-Contra dinosaur, Bob Gates, has mapped out the remainder of Bush's lame-duck term with the old eyes and recollections of daddy Bush's own lame-duck finish to his one-term presidency. Bush's aging guardians are being forced to assume their parental roles once again as they try, with the Democrats and the rest of the nation, to clean up after the three years of reckless muckraking by Junior in Iraq. What other directions from daddy's man in Washington will Bush be forced to accept regarding Iraq?
That question will soon be resolved within the halls of the Capitol where the people's representatives will assume their new power in January. Bush was forced to sit quietly and play nice with victorious Democrats yesterday and today, engaging in "friendly" conversations about the facts of his new legislative impotence. Nancy Pelosi was patronized by Bush as "important" because she was the nation's first Speaker of the House of Representatives. Because he's the "father of young women," he thinks it's important. "I really do," Bush said.
Bush completely understands the importance of Democratic leader Pelosi as he's rallying his fellow lame-duck republican enablers to slip his fascist wiretapping scheme through the reconstructing body. Rep. Pelosi's counterpart, Reid, in the Senate will be similarly suspended in the bubble of the last gasps of the republican guard in that body as they try to put their traitor legs underneath the beleaguered U.N. tyrant Bolton. India is also in line to cop an easy nuke agreement off of the legislative losers.
All of these last-minute convulsions by the wounded republican majority are futile in the face of Bush's retreat behind the fixers from Poppyland. There will be a strong Democratic majority assuming the offices that they once ruled for decades. They will set the nation's agenda, not the old republican guard. Our Democrats know how to govern without parental supervision.
