Are the Democratic Senators that out of touch with their constituents
Based on others polls which reflect that the majority of Democrats are pro-choice, and believe in seperation of powers, I tend to believe that most would support a filibuster of Alito. Are the Senators who are voting NO on alito, but against the filibuster doing what their constituents want them to do?

Remember Murtha said that the public is always a step ahead of congress.

1. They're stuck in that beltway bubble
with the Repugs and have very limited contact with the folks back home, just the way corporate lobbyists like it.

Yes, they're out of touch, which is why they really need to be out of office after a couple of terms for Senators and after six terms for Representatives. They get too used to that carefully controlled environment and to rubbing elbows with the super rich at lavish parties while the folks back home wonder just what in the hell they're thinking when they read about the votes they cast in the local paper.

2. Bear in mind Senators represent their entire state.
Many Senators are in states that are purple or even red, {Nelson {N} and Byrd for example} Just because polls say democrats are pro-choice, and believe in separation of powers doesn't translate into poll numbers for the entire state.

Remember the number one job for a US Senator is to get re-elected. Party principles be dammed.

When Byrd runs for re-election and not only votes for cloture but will vote yes for Alito, are the democrats in VW going to vote for the rethug? Don't think so

3. Murtha is right.Dems, don't be afraid of the "nuclear option" for judicial
nominations, as it is unlikely they would have the votes to pass it. If Frist had had the votes last April, he would have pulled the trigger, but after three months he did not, and the "gang of 14" prevailed--saving Frist from failure.

Let them try it. Call their bluff. Do we really want any of their legislation passed anyway--more tax cuts for those who do not need them, more Health Savings Accounts which will not solve our health care crisis, social security reform in the form of privatization. I don't think so.

Take a stand Democrats! Stand up for what you say you believe in. Stand up for the American people. Do not be a part of putting a justice on the bench who will roll back the gains we have made in the last several decades in civil rights, worker's rights and women's rights.

Go down fighting!

6. Murtha said something about that?
That sure would be odd...since Murtha is not IN the Senate....AND, like Alito, Murtha is opposed to reproductive choice.

8. Murtha is right about the American people being a step ahead of Congress.
That is the only point being made about Rep. Murtha, Mr. Benchley.

10. So for all we know, Murtha is in favor of Alito
since they share the anti-choice position.

5. Grover Norrquist explains:
"Once the minority of House and Senate are comfortable in their minority status, they will have no problem socializing with the Republicans. Any farmer will tell you that certain animals run around and are unpleasant, but when they've been fixed, then they are happy and sedate. They are contented and cheerful. They don't go around peeing on the furniture and such."

7. Yes they are, I'm sad to say. They just don't GET IT. We need a
cohesive, clear message. We need leadership. They need to stop worrying about failure and take principled stands for what they know to be right.
