Please read my email and give advice before I send it off
With the appointment of Samuel Alito, we, the people, see our nation taking a turn that it might never recover from, certainly not in your or my lifetime. We are facing a candidate that is not just a one issue threat, but a threat to the very basis of our way of life and our Constitution. You hold a unique seat to the actions and the directions of an entire nation, affecting today and the very fabric of our future. I must implore you to exercise that position of power to stand, as our forefathers intended, as a blockade for the preservation of our rights and our legacy as a country, for all Americans. The power brokers are being told that we have no recourse and we must go along to get along. I cry foul to that very idea. It took brave actions to create this nation and it will take brave actions to protect it now.

I was always taught that the Constitution and the Bill Of Rights were documents created to protect the powerless against the powerful. We the people find ourselves, now more than ever, quite powerless to stop the march of the powerful without the complete support of those that we charge with this great task in Washington. We can not be effective partners in this union if we do not have those that will stand for us when the need is greatest.

We demand action to be taken to stop this affront on our rights that threatens to change the very structure of our government today and in the future. We elect a President, not and "Imperial" President and that President must be accountable to the citizens. Yet, we see an administration that is willing to rule with fear. At first, it was fear of an outside influence that was determined to destroy our nation. It is clear that now the true and present danger is one that is from within. Fear is no longer just a way to control the ballot box, it is now a way to control the very rights of free speech and dissent from it's controlling nature. When we can no longer feel free to even express our dissent for fear of being spied upon by our own government, we are in dire straits. When peaceful people can no longer meet to discuss peaceful means to end conflict, we are surely in danger of losing all we have worked so hard to create with this great nation of ours.

We must end the fear and terror that is being put upon us by our own government and it must stop with the appointment of this candidate for the Supreme Court. If corporations are allowed to hold more rights as a person than the living breathing individual citizens do, we are nothing but a nation of slaves ruled by fear of each other.

I implore you to do what is necessary to save this country and do it now. Stand between this power grabbing administration and those that they seek to control in such a destructive way. Support the filibuster proposed by Senator Kerry and tell this administration that enough is enough. Then , follow that action with a no vote for Alito's confirmation. Make this the day and the issue that puts the brakes on an administration gone amuck. If you should fail to stop them here, your ability to affect any change in the future as a member of Congress will also be in danger, as his history shows that his support does not belong to the Legislative branch of government.

Stand and be counted today.

4. it is a wonderful letter
however, the last paragraph is confusing to me. If they vote no for cloture, then there will not be a vote for confirmation. I may be wrong.

5. Eventually, there will be a vote for cloture that will pass
the filibuster will merely slow it down for a while. Eventually, it will be pressed to go forward so we need them to vote no when that time comes.

7. You've made some GREAT points ...
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 12:07 PM by NanceGreggs
... but such a long email is likely to be ignored. Below is an edited version, which I think makes all of your points, but in a more concise way:

With the appointment of Samuel Alito, we, the people, are facing a candidate that is not just a one-issue threat, but a threat to the very basis of our way of life and our Constitution.

I was always taught that the Constitution and the Bill Of Rights were documents created to protect the powerless against the powerful. We, the people find ourselves, now more than ever, powerless to stop the march of the powerful without the support of those eleced to represent our interests. We can not be effective partners in this union if you will not stand with us when the need is greatest.

When we elect a President, that President must be accountable to the citizens. This President must be held accountable, and that is why you must take the necessary action to stop the appointment of anyone who threatens to change the very structure of our government today and in the future.

When we can no longer feel free to even express our dissent for fear of being spied upon by our own government, we are in dire straits. When peaceful people can no longer meet to discuss peaceful means to end conflict, we are surely in danger of losing all that we, as Americans, have worked so hard to create.

I implore you to do what is necessary to save this country, by supporting the filibuster proposed by Senator Kerry; tell this administration that enough is enough. Then follow that action with a no vote for Alito's confirmation.

It took brave actions to create this nation; it will take brave actions to protect it now. Stand and be counted today.

8. I really need to learn that

say things in less than 500 word lesson. It seems to be a democratic trait that we can't.

Thanks for the edit. That helps me mightily! :hi:

9. You're very welcome ...
... and it IS a great letter. As you see, I moved this line to the very end, because it's a GREAT ONE:

"It took brave actions to create this nation; it will take brave actions to protect it now. Stand and be counted today."

It's a very powerful thought, and the one that the reader should be left with.
