Proof read and critique this letter to Sen. Byrd, please
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 09:18 AM by madokie
Honorable Senator Byrd;

I'm not one of your constituents. I live in Oklahoma, but what you do also affects me. I'm asking you to reconsider your intent to vote for Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court. Don't get me wrong -- I respect your vote. However, I feel from watching the hearings that Judge Alito will not help retain the checks and balances we so need while we have a President who would rather lie to the American people than tell the truth. I'm very afraid for our Country.

Respectfully,

6. I'm sure it will be dumped but It will make me feel better
When I emailed Sen Reid a while back he pretty much replied that I need to contact my own Senators that he has all he can handle there in Nevada. Like he didn't want to hear from me anymore, kinda' pissed me off too.

7. I tried to send an email last night...
... in the same vein, but his email form wouldn't accept a state other than his own in that required field. Why senators believe that they should only accept input from their state constituents on a matter of national importance is beyond me....

But, I submitted anyway, saying roughly what you've said, but also tried to express my consternation at Byrd's insistence in negating his career of defending the Constitution by supporting someone who wants to make the Senate and the Constitution irrelevant. That's what Alito will do in future judgments on the SC, especially because of his inclination to give more and more power to the Executive.

Unfortunately, Byrd won't change his mind on this, and I think that's due to his determination to be reelected. The last paragraph or so of his statement on supporting Alito says he agrees with Alito that restrictions on expressions of religion in public places is unnecessary, and that tells me he's pandering to the Christian right in his state in order to insure his reelection. Sad that a man who's spent his life holding up the Constitution to his peers is unable to do the right thing constitutionally when his last gasp election is at stake.
