Now that I have your attention... The US government has suggested that singles under the age of 30 refrain from sex until marriage. The idiocy of this "suggestion" is too great to bear. Having previously done research into the state of sex education in the United States, however, I am completely unsurprised. The US has been outright lying to students for years, with abstinence-only education programs that harm the nation's children more than not telling them anything could.
So now the Department of Health and Human Services has seen fit to infiltrate the lives of adults as well. The politically appointed know-nothings in the Capital want to tell you what to do and when to do it (pun intended). This latest push by advocates of abstinence-only education is not only insulting, it is infuriating. The US Government is treating its citizenry like small children. This has simply got to stop.
Condoms work, abstinence doesn't. There are no studies supporting abstinence-only education over a comprehensive sex education. The current policy of lying to students about the effectiveness of condoms and birth control has not helped stop the spread of sexually transmitted disease or the prevalence of teen pregnancy in our society. When Bush points to falling teen pregnancy rates in the US, do not be fooled into believing that this was the work of the Abstinence-only programs touted by the government. This is due to the greatly increased availability of condoms and birth control- which are handed out in many schools across the nation- as well as safe-sex information found online (and in advice columns across the nation, thanks to Dan Savage).
After a person passes the "age of consent" in their state (16-18), they are allowed to do as they see fit with other, consenting adults.. The government is not allowed to step in and say that any one thing is inappropriate or against the law- thanks to Lawrence V. Texas, your bedroom is your business. Don't allow the government to stop you- legally or through "public relations" (propaganda). This "suggestion" is nothing short of an affront on the liberties of all adult Americans. Stand up, in your bedroom and in the offices of your politicians.
Stop taking it and start... taking it.
