Kerry's Remarks: Here's the Question to Ask.
Kerry is not a good public speaker, he has a lousy sense of timing, and he'd screw up a Henny Youngman joke. Example:

Henny Youngman would say, "take my wife...
... (pause)
... (pause)
... (pause)
Please!"

Kerry would say, "takemywifeplease."

Wrong. He should try not to tell any more jokes for the next week (at least). Just my opinion. Fine. That doesn't matter though.

Here's the question to ask:

"How many military funerals has Kerry attended?" I don't know the number, but I know it's not zero. Now ask the question of Bush. "How many military funerals has Bush attended?" That answer, I do know. Zero.

When you want to know who's respecting the troops, that's what counts. Ask that question. Make that the issue.

1. Aw hell. You can't tell me the Repukes haven't been just SCOURING
every speech made by EVERY Democrat just LOOKING for something they could wrench out of context and use it to club every other Democrat in the country.

Kerry's only "mistake" was saying something that was able to be taken out of context - and I'm sorry, but no one can avoid that kind of mistake. RW assassins are poised for this kind of shit because they have literally NOTHING else to run on this year.

4. Those are the empty suits Kerry referred to in his explanation
...of what he said the next day. RW assassins describes the republican gutter campaign strategy being used to a tee.

7. Amen!
I can just picture them hunkered down in some "war room" somewhere, scouring headlines and blogs and press releases so they can say "Joe Blow in West Fuckistan, Minnesota just said THIS! Quick, write a headline!" Sheesh. People say things like this all the time, when they are addressing a partisan crowd. It's business as usual. No one is gonna care!

9. I applaud your devotion, but Kerry really *did* blow the punchline
What Kerry said: "You get stuck in Iraq."

What Kerry was supposed to say: "You get US stuck in Iraq."

Had he gotten the one-liner right, there's no way it could've been taken out of context. He had, from the reports I've seen, used the one-liner in the past, to no ill effect.

It's sort of like the little minefields that broadcasters walk through every day. You can say "She sits . . . " on the air ninety-nine times to no ill effect. But on the hundredth time, when you say "She shits . . . " on the air, you're out of a job, no questions asked.

I agree that the Repiglican thugs were waiting for Kerry to screw up. Mainly, they were waiting because they knew that's all they had to do: wait.

To me, this isn't a perception problem. It's a judgment problem.

12. Maybe he botched it on purpose so he could come back with his
most excellent rebuttal/explanation?  Or maybe he's just lousy at making jokes. :yoiks:

13. I vote for the latter
instead of the former.

Great rebuttal, though. Really.

Ask any trial lawyer: the problem with rebuttals is that you are de facto on the defensive.

2. Kerry has attended the funeral of every fallen MA s soldier
As well as some for soldiers from other places. He has personally called the families, and offered them any help they need, without any desire for publicity or credit.

6. rox63, I didn't know that. I know he's gone to a few, saw pics of
him and Sen. Kennedy at one or two, but that just about says it all, doesn't it. What a difference in a real vet vs. the faux one in the wh.
I respect Senator Kerry even more now.

As magnolia points out in another thread, there have been TWO BOOKS published of Junior**'s verbal cock-ups.

5. This whole issue is just a made up issue anyway. It's the latest
incarnation of the "Dean Scream," no substance all GOP hype.

It's cover for election fraud, IMHO.

10. Can someone tell me tell me what this botched joke is?
I had out of town family here and missed the whole thing. I saw the tape of his comment run on tv this morning and it did come off sounding, well, not good. But then I heard later that he had left out a word or botched a joke, or something like that. What was it that he was intending to say?

11. Kerry tells some pretty good jokes!
He botches a few occasionally!

When it comes to respect for the troops and their sacrifice, Kerry is a giant and Bush is a liar!

15. I want to add...
Edited on Wed Nov-01-06 11:48 AM by mahatmakanejeeves
that anyone who refers to Iraq as "just a comma" has no business criticizing the remarks of others.
