Apparently, President Kerry was making a droll joke (DAMN that dry wit!!) about the pResident's C-average and not commenting on the grand tradition of underprivileged youth being sent to fight the rich man's wars.
This trim, calm, decorated Vet's been standing guard at the Viet Nam Memorial at the state capitol for fifteen years, to prevent vandalism and damage. He says people don't show respect to the memorial, some intentionally vandalize, some "go crazy" playing on it, tour groups and kids swarm over it, pieces get broken off statues.............
Today I stop and talk with him about this war in Iraq. He says it's all about people lining their pockets. "Lady Bird Johnson made money on the Viet Nam War. She owned the company that made Bell helicoptors."
And "we don't want to see the troops coming back from Iraq getting what we got." I say that many people who protested this war before it started care about the troops, don't want them put in harm's way for no reason, don't want their lives lost and needlessly damaged.
He says, "It's the ones with money that are protesting. It's the poor -- the poor blacks, the poor whites, the poor hispanics..... who get sent to fight wars."
Then: "They need to bring back the Draft. Send the gang bangers. They think they wanna kill each other over here, play that game? Let them go over there and see how it really is. That'd get rid of them over here."
This war goes on and he stands guard.
