How long will HATE and WAR divide us? the answer is BLOWIN' IN THE WIND w/ GRAPHICS
Welcome to woodstock online

While generally attributed to Bob Dylan, there is some evidence that he was not the original author of Blowin' In The Wind. There is also a nasty rumor going around the right side of the web that he had little interest in the anti-war movement but he adamantly claims that he wrote this song, which IS anti-war. While he did not perform at Woodstock Bob Dylan did sing at the Isle of Wight Festival in England several weeks later. There is one thing that is certain: He once had a very talented girlfriend, who gives an excellent rendition of the song and she has spent her life as one of the greatest social reformers of our time. She IS certainly anti-war!

Born January 9, 1941, American folk icon, Joan Chandos Baez is known for her highly individual vocal style. An outstanding soprano, she has a three-octave vocal range and a distinctive throat vibrato.

Her father, Albert Baez, was a renowned physicist (co-inventor of the x-ray microscope and author of one of the most widely used physics textbooks in the U.S.) He refused lucrative defense industry jobs during the Cold War, including the Manhattan Project which built the first atomic bomb at Los Alamos. Dr. Baez, like most fathers, had a profound impact on Joan.

For reason of his work, the Baez family lived not only in the United States but also in France, Switzerland, Italy, and Iraq. At only ten years old, Joan began speaking out about the poverty and suffering of the people of Baghdad. Later, Joan wrote that she felt a certain affinity with beggars in Baghdad and felt "their suffering was a part of her."

In 1956, a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. on nonviolence and civil rights reportedly brought tears to her eyes. Several years later, the two became close friends, as she took an active role in his movement for racial equality, helping him bring about much-needed reform. That very year, Joan bought her first guitar and began entertaining fellow students at school.

In 1980, Joan was awarded Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees by both Antioch and Rutgers universities for the "universality of her music." Baez also played a significant role in the Live Aid concert for famine relief, along with many other causes, including A Conspiracy of Hope for Amnesty International. In 1983, she appeared on the Grammy Awards, performing "Blowing In The Wind," a song she first performed some twenty years earlier.

Don't miss THIS version of the song!

How many roads must a man walk down

Before you call him a man?

How many seas must a white dove sail

Before she sleeps in the sand?

How many times
must the cannon balls fly

Before they're forever banned?

The answer, my friend,
is blowing in the wind,

The answer is blowing in the wind.

How many years
can a mountain exist

Before it's washed to the sea?

How many years must some people exist

Before they're allowed to be free?

and How many times
can a man turn his head,

and pretend that he just doesn't see?

The answer:

The answer, my friend,
is blowing in the wind,

The answer is blowing in the wind.

How many times can a man look up

Before he sees the sky?

How many ears must one person have

Before he can hear people cry?

and How many deaths, will it take, till he knows

That too many people have died?

The answer, my friend,
is blowing in the wind,

The answer is blowing in the wind.

oh, the answer, my friend,
is blowing in the wind,

The answer is blowing in the wind.

31. Kick. Very nice post.
Very nice post.

Our government should not have invaded a country that we had under containment and which did not attack us.

George W Bush attacked Iraq for political popularity and to destroy the New Deal and the Great Society.

24. i never used the word "groovy" by the time I came of age, many...
considered it tennie-bopper... modern media still thinks hippies said that word and maybe they DID before my time in '69. i wasn't in southern Cal. As for ALL Love and Peace at the festival read this for Wikipedia:

At Woodstock in 1969, Hoffman interrupted The Who's performance to attempt a protest speech against the jailing of John Sinclair of the White Panther Party. He grabbed a microphone and yelled, "I think this is a pile of shit! While John Sinclair rots in prison. . ." The Who's guitarist, Pete Townshend, unhappy with the interruption, cut Hoffman off mid-sentence, snarling, "Fuck off! Fuck off my fucking stage!" He then struck Hoffman with his guitar, sending him tumbling offstage. Townshend later said he actually agreed with Hoffman on Sinclair's imprisonment, though he made the point that he would have knocked him offstage regardless of his message. The audio of this event can be heard on the The Who's box set,Thirty Years of Maximum R&B (Disc 2, Track 20, "Abbie Hoffman Incident").

According to Hoffman, in his autobiography, the incident played out like this, "If you ever heard about me in connection with the festival it was not for playing Florence Nightingale to the flower children. What you heard was the following: 'Oh, him, yeah, didn't he grab the microphone, try to make a speech when Peter Townshend cracked him over the head with his guitar?' I've seen countless references to the incident, even a mammoth mural of the scene. What I've failed to find was a single photo of the incident. Why? Because it didn't really happen.

"I grabbed the microphone all right and made a little speech about John Sinclair, who had just been sentenced to ten years in the Michigan State Penitentiary for giving two joints of grass to two undercover cops, and how we should take the strength we had at Woodstock home to free our brothers and sisters in jail. Something like that. Townshend, who had been tuning up, turned around and bumped into me. A nonincident really. Hundreds of photos and miles of film exist depicting the events on that stage, but none of this much-talked about scene."

the event was VERY political and contraversial.

44. No, I never attended any festivals like Woodstock.
We didn't have much money and it was all my parents could do to put my brother and me through college. Travel like that was not in the budget. I played in a band, though. That was fun.

"no, you ought to know we've been doing OPs like this for months." Yeah, you're right we've been to THOUSANDS of sites hunting antiwar graphics. last night was VERY different." Hey, did you hear about that net neutrality thing?"...

30. did you read my last entry where i was talking to myself?
what was REALLY odd is when my machine kept saying "can't find server" here at DU and in my Photobucket, when I was doing spell check and working out the finer graphic points on the OP. It suddenly stopped, once I began copying my work before previewing the piece. The WEB is changing, literally over-night. I read they snuck some law through, also in the dead of night, dealing with this recently. Do you know anything about it?
