Does anyone want to fight for change? THE BOXER by Simon & Garfunkel WITH GRAPHICS!
Edited on Mon Oct-30-06 05:12 AM by Jeffersons Ghost
As a 'Nam veteran, this one was tough for me to put together, although most of the images were easy to find. I must, for once, disagree with the fine lyrics of this duo, because sometimes after certain "changes" we are NOT "more or less the same." Some changes are permanent.

Here is the link to a live version of the song with a verse not commonly heard. After clicking the link, the MP3 downloads rapidly with cable. There will be a blank window covering this thread after you click the link, which you simply close to view images, while listening to music.

THE BOXER
Simon and Garfunkel
written by Paul Simon
released 1968
I am just a poor boy though my story's seldom told

I have squandered my resistance

For a pocket full of mumbles,
such are promises

All lies in jest, still a man hears
what he wants to hear,
and disregards the rest

hmm hmm hmmm

When I left my home and my family,

I was no more than a boy

In the company of strangers In the quiet of the railway station
running scared

Laying low seeking out the poorer quarters,

Where the ragged people go

Looking for the places
only they would know

lay

lay

lay,

lay

lay

lay

lay

lay

lay-

lay

lay-

lay

lay

lay

lay

lay-

lay

lay

lay

lay

lay-

lay

lay

lay

lay.

Asking only workman's wages I come looking for a job,

but I get no offers

Just a come on from the
whores on seventh avenue

I do declare there were times
when I was so lonesome

I took some comfort there

lay

lay

lay,

lay

lay

lay

lay

Now the years are rolling by me,
they are rockin' even me

I am older than I once was,

and younger than I'll be, that's not unusual

No it isn't strange, after changes
upon changes, we are more or less the same

After changes

we are more or less the same ...

lay

lay,

lay

lay

lay

lay,

lay-

lay

lay,

lay-

lay

lay-

lay

lay

lay

lay

lay

lay-

lay

lay

lay

lay.

lay

lay

lay

And I am laying out my winter clothes and wishing I was gone,

Going home

Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me,

Leading me, going home

In the clearing stands a boxer
and a fighter by her trade

And she carries the reminders

Of every glove that laid her down
or cut her till she cried out

In her anger and their shame,

I am leaving, I am leaving,

But the fighter still remains

yeah, she still remains

lay

lay

lay,

lay

lay

lay

lay

lay

lay-

2. Very moving and cuts to the heart.
"The Boxer" is one of those songs that will always be "true". It's both pessimistic and optimistic and reflects such great struggle. It could apply to me, to you, and to the universe. You did it justice. Beautifully done.

14. P.S. maybe those "faces" didn't die for nothing as long as this OP lives...
maybe they can save more lives, though they lost their own, on both sides of this conflict, with some help from others at DU

What individual can remain aloof to what they gave... Who can ignore the pain their families feel today... ALL of these faces stopped smiling on Earth, this month, but maybe, just maybe, they still smile at what we do here from beyond life.

Ms. Pelosi is well-endowed with that virtue but you're right Tammy has certainly got a background to build character, although it's too soon to tell. If she can keep her nose clean in that DC den of thieves for half as long as Nancy she's doing well, in my book.

I love the Simon & Garfunkel songs, and I've never heard that extra verse. I wish your compilations chould be shown on television in the final days before the election. Is there any way to get them aired on a local station, at least? Either way, excellent work.

I say this with tears welling in my eyes as I view these photos and listen to the melody and lyrics of one of the greatest songs ever written.

Jefferson, you have a gift for touching hearts. Cherish that gift, as we on DU cherish you.

For those who want to see the video on YouTube of this remarkable song which transcends generations:

18. thanks for that! as you all view the video remember their faces....
remember what they have given... I used to think the gazillion, trillion or whatever they spent was a cost but paper has no value... ask the families of these faces the REAL cost... did they die for nothing? I pledge, as long as I live that they did not die needlessly... they fought for FREEDOM and it's freedom we must now defend. Please don't forget to comment and vote on this OP, after you see Paul and Art. Don't forget to help Tammy, John and others veterans at the bottom of the OP either. NEVER FORGET!

21. I've wanted to do a video with these lyrics for a while. One critique...
The lyric is "LIE LA LIE. LIE LA LIE LIE LIE LA LIE." Not LAY LAY LAY LAY LAY.

You missed a golden opportunity to feature pictures of Bush, Rummy, Cheney, et al, spouting their LIE LIE LIES!

Just my humble opinion. Nice job!

27. thank you for constructive criticism...
I realized what the lyrics originally were before I copied, pasted and then altered them... Originally my intent was to do EXACTLY what you suggested. Then, I opened my photo-bucket and saw all those faces staring at me. I put them there for an OP I did last week and their smiles changed my motivation. I first considered altering the words to "die, die, die" but I didn't relish portraying or thinking of them that way. I could also have gone back the the Washington Post site, which honors them, and gotten other faces, instead of recycling what I had, but I could not bear to see other freshly fallen faces. These will remain in my photo-bucket and heart.

25. EVERYONE who reads THIS S&G thread deserves an outlet for their...
negative emotions and a chance to smile again... if anyone feels hate, read THIS OP, which I THINK is still available for people to recommend but PLEASE DO NOT VOTE FOR IT! It is about to get 4 stars, on the main board. Please don't let that happen. In my humble opinion, Evil, even in fun, should not be above Good on the MAIN page, here at DU. Enjoy this fun thread that will give you a non-human target for harsh feelings and realize a Ghost is allowed a bit of mischief on Halloween.

24. Hey, that was some beautiful work, I just read that thread...
Brought tears to my eyes. Really beautiful.

If you want to do the same with the "Rich Man's War" song, here are the lyrics:

Jimmy joined the army ‘cause he had no place to go
There ain’t nobody hirin’
‘round here since all the jobs went
down to Mexico
Reckoned that he’d learn himself a trade maybe see the world
Move to the city someday and marry a black haired girl
Somebody somewhere had another plan
Now he’s got a rifle in his hand
Rollin’ into Baghdad wonderin’ how he got this far
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

Bobby had an eagle and a flag tattooed on his arm
Red white and blue to the bone when he landed in Kandahar
Left behind a pretty young wife and a baby girl
A stack of overdue bills and went off to save the world
Been a year now and he’s still there
Chasin’ ghosts in the thin dry air
Meanwhile back at home the finance company took his car
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

When will we ever learn
When will we ever see
We stand up and take our turn
And keep tellin’ ourselves we’re free

Ali was the second son of a second son
Grew up in Gaza throwing bottles and rocks when the tanks would come
Ain’t nothin’ else to do around here just a game children play
Somethin’ ‘bout livin’ in fear all your life makes you hard that way

He answered when he got the call
Wrapped himself in death and praised Allah
A fat man in a new Mercedes drove him to the door
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war
