Evangelical-GOP Ties WeakenBy RACHEL ZOLL 10.29.06, 1:53 PM ET

Of the many disturbing trends for Republicans this campaign season, one of the most troubling is the drop in support among white evangelicals. The number of conservative Christians with a favorable view of the party has plummeted from 74 percent to 54 percent between 2004 and this year, according to the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. Evangelicals comprise more than one-third of GOP voters.
But analysts say it's far too soon to write off the powerful Republican-evangelical alliance that helped the party dominate in the 2004 election. Conservative Christians have been here before - disappointed that Republicans they helped elect failed to enact the evangelical agenda - yet they have consistently returned to the GOP. Even as they question the current Republican leadership, evangelicals are far more supportive than other Americans of President Bush and the party, the Pew Center found.
"There's a lot of discontentment," said Marvin Olasky, editor of the Christian newsweekly World and a framer of the "compassionate conservative" language used by Bush. "But unfortunately for most conservative evangelicals, there's no alternative."
That doesn't mean the GOP can rest easy. Damage over the past two years could cost Republicans on Nov. 7 if disenchanted evangelical voters stay home. And tensions with a core constituency would muddy the run-up to the 2008 presidential race.

Religious Right Has Controlled Republican Party For Far Too LongSunday, October 29, 2006
By Paul A. Mastriacovo

Many politically active Christian conservatives will be angered by this column. They've politely petitioned, sometimes badgered and occasionally bullied Republican office holders and would-be office holders to get their political agenda accepted. Many traditional conservative Republicans are beginning to rebel and speak out against this takeover of the GOP.
Some local Republicans told me they are unhappy that the Republican Party, which they hold dear and want to recapture, has abandoned many of its conservative principles and has become a tool of the religious right. They told me they cannot in good conscience vote for Kenneth Blackwell, the Republican candidate for Ohio governor, because they believe he is under the thumb of powerful Christian leaders.
Recently, a number of books have been published that also lament the Christian right's influence on the GOP. Maybe the most influential is by John Danforth. He was a Republican U.S. senator from Missouri for 18 years and served as George W. Bush's ambassador to the United Nations. He is also an Episcopal priest. His new book is titled "Faith and Politics: How the 'Moral Values' Debate Divides America and How to Move Forward Together."
Danforth argues that it is not good for either politics or religion to have them so closely joined. No one can know absolutely what God believes or would want done on each political issue. Such a claim is arrogance in the extreme, Danforth says. Not only are there many non-Christians with different interpretations, but even devout Christians differ over precisely what the word of God is and how their faith applies to worldly issues. Danforth suggests that Christian conservatives such as James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Ralph Reed and Pat Robertson have inappropriately inserted fundamental Christian belief into government, dividing us as a nation. While people should have faith, as Danforth does, he profoundly disagrees with any group's imposing that religious faith on everyone else.
