NBC's Chip Reed: "The Mark Foley Scandal Investigation Is Going To Widen"...
| Posted October 29, 2006 11:35 AM

READ MORE: Investigations, Dennis Hastert, Mark Foley, NBC

On Sunday's The Chris Matthews Show, NBC Congressional Correspondent Chip Reed dropped a bomb during Matthew's "Tell Me Something I Don't Know" segment. "I'm going to be a little cryptic here," Reed began, then added, ""the Mark Foley scandal investigation is going to widen a little bit." Reed is referring to the House Ethics Committee Investigation of sexually explicit messages sent from former Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) to teenage pages over the last several years. Investigation of Foley's relationship with the pages, as well as whether GOP House leadership covered up or ignored knowledge of Foley's attention to pages, is still ongoing and has included appearances before the Ethics Committee of everyone from Hill staffers to House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL).

1. This is the only way for Democrats to counter the Repub strategy...
of sex and gay marriage issues, which they use to try and convince the voters that Democrats have no morals. Throw it back in their faces. That's the only way to counter their attacks. Just like Webb handed it back to Allen yesterday.

16. The Republicans have hit the trifecta with the Mark Foley Scandal.
The Republicans don't like sex outside of marriage. Ding.

The Republicans don't like gay people and don't like gay sex. Ding.

The Republicans don't like sexual predators. Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding.

The Republicans in one fell swoop have failed right in front of their wacko religiosos and the independents who vote for them on sexual moral grounds.

Another point. Do not let the Republicans and the press use the term moral values anymnore. Force the press and the Republicans to classify these as sexual moral values, a narrow slice of the range of moral values.

14. By "widen" do they mean it will ensnare Dems, or does he really mean
"deepen" as in MORE REPUBLICKS? If it deepens into the republick realm, may they get what they deserve.

And by "ensnare dems" I mean FACTUALLY not the republick, lie and smear version. I hope not either way.

20. We must stress the coverup, not the crime.
Ken Mehlman, Ed Gillespie, Denny Hastert, and all Repulsive spokespeople are slyly spinning the Foley issue as being about Foley, when the real issue is the coverup. In every interview and debate I've heard--including several shows on NPR--they've managed to slip that spin past both their Dem adversary and the hosts of the shows. (I've fired off emails to the hosts each time, but it's unlikely there will be another chance for the hosts to interrogate those guests before the election.)

Essentially, the Repulsives' position is that Foley was "one bad apple," then they go on to say that he'd have been expelled from Congress if he hadn't resigned.

True enough--any group of 435 powerholders is bound to contain some sleazeballs. But the coverup proved there are a LOT of rotten apples in this barrel, and that they were the Republican leadership! It's an outrageous betrayal of the public trust.

As we do our canvassing or phone-banking, we must make sure we don't let the dialogue become focused on Foley's depradations, but on the far worse crime--the conspiracy to cover it up until after the election. It shows exactly what this "family" cherishes as its "values."

24. Seems Like Someone's Moving This Story Along...
I do not say this to be either cynical or negative, but I've long thought there's someone out there who not only had the info on Foley that not only got this story into the corporate media but made it stick. Its timing on the last day of the House session was no coincidence as with all the Congresscritters at home campaigning, there would be few of the "usual suspects" inside the beltway to either shut this story down or stonewall it. This scandal surely caught the Repugnican machine by total surprise and their current fear campaign ramped up big following this...each time getting more shrill as the scandal grew.

Somehow I suspect there's one more shoe to drop on this story and if there's an ideal time for that to happen is late this week...giving a story a good 24 hours to work through the news cycle and forcing Repugnicans on the last weekend of the campaign to once again hide under rocks and defending the indefensible. And I sure hope that happens.

Don't let the corporate media and Rove snow you into thinking this story is dead and not really a factor in this election...Foley will be looked back upon as the turning point of this election as it finally forced the corporate media to confront this regime's corruption in a way Abramoff couldn't. One more big burst in this story could make it the major topic; wiping out the fear campaign and make election day even more interesting.

29. Their cover-up is working. No news from GOP controlled "investigation"
We need to start screaming on this because Hastert's cover up infuriates voters.
