Jeffersonville - At a Montgomery County GOP fundraiser at the Westover Country Club, Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman described the elections in Pennsylvania for U.S. Senate, Congress and governor as "ground zero."
"It is ground zero because our friends on the Left have targeted Rick Santorum more than any other senator. And you know why they targeted him? They targeted him because he's so effective," Mehlman said, referring to Sen. Santorum's record of lowering taxes, reforming the welfare system, supporting the fight against Islamist terrorism, and reforming government.
The fundraiser on Thursday saw the attendance of Lynn Swann, U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon, and incumbents and challengers for state senate and house in Montgomery County. Mehlman endorsed Lynn Swann, the GOP candidate for governor, because he had a plan to improve education, reform lobbyist disclosure and lawsuit abuse, and reform property taxes for all Pennsylvanians.
"You have a governor, Ed Rendell, who ran for office saying 'vote for me and I'll reform the property taxes.' How many folks in here have had their property taxes reformed? I didn't think so.
You got a governor that unfortunately is part of the status quo in Harrisburg and instead of standing up to the lobbyists, cuts deals with them. You have a governor that is against legal reform," the RNC Chairman said.
Mehlman said there are times in America as a whole and in states and communities where who gets elected changes the course of history. He alluded to fighting communism in 1940s, the Korean War, the Marshall Plan, and the formation of NATO. "Those decisions ensured peace and security for a generation. So if we were to look back now, we understood that it wouldn't have be a line to say who we elected at that time was absolutely critical to our future," he said.
Mehlman said his first campaign was for Ronald Reagan, and saw how crucial his leadership was to bringing down the Soviet Union and creating economic opportunities in America.
He said America is a nation at war and that the enemy Americans face is just as dangerous as World War II.<snip>
