I was talking to a woman out in Palmyra Wisconsin today (pop 1700), and I thought she hit it right on the head.
That's what the Republican candidate for governor talks about. Somehow these two issues are supposed to be more important than health care, the economy, and the war in Iraq. She said very simply that her marriage doesn't need to be "defended" against gay marriage. The issue of stem cell research is irrelevant, she pointed out, if you don't have health insurance to begin with. They can invent the most wonderful cures that people won't be able to afford.
She had a yardsign for Democratic Governor Doyle, but she is surrounded by Republican signs and bewildered by it.
Thank God for teachers and other people who belong to unions. They have a connection to the Democratic party that lends a needed balance to small towns.
