BREAKING NEWS: Mike Malloy joins Nova M Radio on October 30!
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 05:42 PM by CaseyBuck
It's not on Mike's main page yet, but it's here, and it sounds very official:

http://www.novamradio.com/

We the People,

It is with great excitement and optimism that I announce today the formation of a new progressive talk radio network. Myself along with my partners, Anita and Sheldon Drobny; the original cofounders of the Air America Radio Network, want to be the first to tell all you “truth seekers” that the original truth seeker himself Mike Malloy will be born again live on the public airwaves. The planned second coming (barring any apocalypse) is scheduled for October 30, 2006. The Mike Malloy Show will initially broadcast live, from 9PM -12 Midnight (EST) on Nova M Radio affiliates 1480-AM KPHX Phoenix.

In addition, I’m equally excited to announce our strategic partnership with Joe Trippi and associates. Joe Trippi revolutionized electoral politics in America with his instrumental role in Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential campaign, raising over $40 million in small donor contributions over the internet. Joe created a new paradigm in how campaigns locally and nationally are conducted by leveraging the scope and breadth of innovative internet-based technologies and digital tools. Joe and his team will help us reach out to millions of us who share common values and common goals.

Also joining our team will be internationally renowned pollster John Zogby, President and CEO of Zogby International. John will be co-hosting a weekly one hour show, “The Pulse of the Nation” where John polls particular hot button issues from politics and pop culture to the War in Iraq and stem cell research. Each program will include expert guests and audience participation. At the end of each show John will reveal the secret results of the poll and each listener will then know whether or not they have their finger on “The Pulse of the Nation”!

We will continue to build upon the foundation laid by our predecessors and will work tirelessly to fulfill our fiduciary responsibilities to our investors. Equally important, we will with the millions of faithful progressive listeners uphold our vision to promote freedom, social justice, economic justice and peace worldwide.

We have many more exciting announcements to make; new talent, name of new network and so on. So stay tuned and keep up to date at our web site, www.novamradio.com ! And as always, from the bottom of my bleeding liberal heart, God Bless America!

In Solidarity,

Mike Newcomb, MD
CEO & Chairman, Nova M Radio, Inc.

16. Are they just going to do the same aquisition of shitty AM stations ?
A progressive talker cannot break through on that kind of outdated medium. We need to go after some high power FM stations.

36. It depends on the donations.
Man this is the exact way to approach the "fcc problem". It's what the right did with the media.

Bigger donations means bigger transmitters and stations of greater value.

This just sounds like the right thing, even with as little info as we have here.

125. Easier said than done
Edited on Mon Oct-16-06 01:17 AM by Fighting Irish
FM stations are insanely expensive. And the only ones often within financial reach are rimshots with staticy coverage of portions of metro areas. AM stations are much more within reach.

Not many FM stations are doing full-fledged talk. Sure, there's a few, and there's even WXXM in Madison, one of the few FM liberal talkers, that is doing well. But that's an exception. Most owners prefer to put music formats on FM, and save talk for AM.

Another trend to keep an eye out for is something called HD Radio. It's a good bet that it's already in your town. What it means is that HD-capable stations have one or two subchannels, each with different programming. And a station in Wyoming has added the AAR feed to its subchannel. However, there is a catch. In order to hear HD radio, you need to buy a receiver to pick it up. HD will take a few years to catch on, but if and when it does, the radio landscape could get interesting. Or, it could fail miserably like another promising idea, AM stereo.

157. Recently, I drove thru OK and tuned in FM. Starting on the left side
of the dial, the first 5 stations were Christian radio stations. FIVE!!!

The next was a public station.

Where do they get the money to do this kind of stuff?

Maybe we need to start passing the hat or buying real estate.

I have nothing against Christian or religious broadcasting. Everything has its place. But it seems to me that right now, there's a greater need for progressive political talk than sermons and fear mongering about abortion, gay marriage, evolution, creationism, secularism, et al., ad nauseum.

encourage Nova M to get Ben Burch to handle all the streaming, archiving and podcasting.

Ben's work at White Rose, as well as his tireless efforts on behalf of the Head-On Radio Network (H.O.R.N.) www.headonradionetwork.com have proven that there's no one in the liberal world more competent and more dedicated to getting liberal radio on the internet.

101. Well, someone did:
Peter B. Collins did. He's on 3-6PM and he's AWESOME.

"Peter B. Collins is a well-known broadcaster, voice- over talent, entrepreneur, and media consultant based in San Francisco. His recent show on Sirius satellite radio was All-American Talk Radio -- for all Americans, not just dittoheads and right-wing nuts. He presents a lively forum with views and voices often not heard in the formerly liberal media. Often funny, never boring, Peter loves to mix it up with guests and callers. Call in - 1 (888) 5-PeterB/1 (888) 573-8372"

Weekdays 3 - 6pm on 540/KRXA

28. I know KPHX 1480 does stream.
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 06:02 PM by CaseyBuck
Plus, there will most likely be more ways to stream as well.

I have a feeling that quite a lot of Mike's former AAR affiliates will end up carrying the new Malloy program. After all, there's not much competition in that slot, except for EcoTalk and Jon Elliot (yawn!) And the 9 PM slot works great for affiliates who carry Randi after Ed Schultz.

I think some final details are still being hashed out before Mike and Kathy officially announce their return on the main page. But now we know Mike's finally coming back for good, and for a company with honest-to-God true liberals for management, plus we all get to go to bed an hour earlier!

113. Isn't this Mike Newcome
the guy who worked to get AAR back in AZ after the Christian station bought the other AAR station - I have been streaming to listen to AAR at this station because I often have trouble with the AAR stream and I really like this station - even love the commercials - you know the merchants gladly admitting they support liberal radio This is cool - only problem is Mike Malloy won't be ending just as we go into Bernie Ward's show - guess I'll have to catch an hour of Tom Hartmann on the Portland station....so many streams - going to have to get a score card.....

118. I sincerely hope
KPHX will contract directly with Ben Burch to begin handling not only Mike's archives, but his podcasting and the entire KPHX stream, as well.

As Ben has proven in his association with us here at the Head-On Radio Network (H.O.R.N.), he really IS the hardest working man in Liberal Talk. What's more, he gets it right the first time, and does so in a manner that makes the stream available to listeners on ALL formats.

The smartest thing they could do, right behind getting Mike back on the air so quickly, is to let Ben run the streaming end of things.

38. ATTENTION XM SUBSCRIBERS....
now that this info is PUBLIC.. here's the direction to get these shows on XM

email to XM165@aol.com (yes, it's an AOL address.. you may or may not know, but there is a XM/AOL partnership that streams XM to AOL subs..)

here's your talking points... (USE THEM ALL PLEASE, EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT 100% BEHIND THEM, IT'S IMPORTANT)

- Mention Nova M several times... very important
- Mike Malloy was AAR's most popular host and WE WANT HIM BACK ON XM.
- Getting John Zogby for a regular show is a coup that can't be passed up.
- Dr Mike would be a good national show also.

other VERY IMPORTANT POINTS TO DROP IN (TRUST ME ON THESE...)

- Ed Schultz is split over two channels and tape delayed, we want Big Eddie back LIVE.
- There are a LOT of important voices out there that need a better platform: Stephanie Miller, Bill Press, LIONEL and Jerry Springer (DON'T GIVE ME SHIT ON THIS.. PEOPLE ARE STILL LISTENING TO HIM AND HE'S ALREADY HIGH ON THE 'ACQUIRE LIST').

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT POINT TO REPEAT.

- XM Needs a second LEFT channel to compliment AAR, done right, you can make a channel that gets BETTER ratings than AAR).

THINGS NOT TO SAY

DON'T MAKE ANY CLEAR CHANNEL BASHES, to get these shows up and on the air FAST, they will need some of the bandwidth CC holds (by litigation).. I don't say you need to say anything NICE about CLEAR CHANNEL, just DON'T MENTION IT.

DON'T DO ANY AAR BASHING.. and I mean NONE. Competition comparisions, yes, but NOT BASHING, that includes slinging any shit (no matter how well deserved) about Morning Sedition, Malloy or Maron. NONE! GOT IT? Doing so will hurt chances of getting them on the air.

SIRIUS PEOPLE: Go for it also... good luck... you may need it..

133. Hey Rosco T! No bashing, just a couple of questions
Since you appear to be on the inside:

1.) Does Nova M have a strategy with regard to satellite? Do they want to be on either one or (preferably) both of the services? Or do they want to build a name on terrestrial first?

2.) Does the XM-AAR exclusivity contract have a bankruptcy clause, as is common in so many other contracts?

1) I would hope so, and if people followed thru on "Operation Truthseeker" as well as I hoped, then the groundwork has already been laid to let XM/Woof-Woof know THERE IS A DEMAND AND DESIRE (and follow thru on the "ATTN XM SUBSCRIBERS" message ..)

2) I'm not privy to that level of contract detail, but PLEASE people, remember this a Chapter 11 REORGANIZATION filing, not Chapter 7 LIQUIDATION.. AAR will stay on the air.

Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 10:11 AM by drbtg1
...stay on the air. It was a question of whether the bankrupcy has an effect on the exclusivity. Many other contracts, in whole or in part, become null and void when bankrupcy is declared (either Chapter 7 or 11) or allow the possibility of action by one of the parties. My question was asked wondering if XM may dump AAR (as they recently did with MSNBC), AAR will look elsewhere, or things will stay the same. Regardless of the outcome, it seems quite possible that the bankrupcy may allow the door to be opened.

94. I doubt that will be allowed to happen
Though to be honest this is one merger I'd approve because satellite radio seriously needs more bandwidth. With an XM/Sirius merger they could eventually merge their content and provide better sound quality for every channel. However that would probably take years after a merger (new receivers would probably be required.)

70. My email.
I was just reading Democratic Underground and learned Mike Malloy -- formally of Air America Radio -- has joined Nova M, a new progressive talk radio network. It is really important to get a second left-leaning channel on XM to compliment AAR. As an XM subscriber, I would love to see a second XM progressive channel.

Mike Malloy, as well as other progressive talkers need to be carried on XM. Mike was one of AAR's best broadcasters and it was unfortunate for AAR to stop carrying his show due to the financial problems that AAR is currently experiencing. Their loss can be XM's gain by offering a second progressive channel.

I feel other left-leaning talkers not on XM should be. Currently, Stephanie Miller is NOT on XM. (Actually, I'm podcasting her as I type this.) Political genius Thom Hartmann is syndicated by AAR, but not in the official lineup. His national show is merely offered as a stream from the AAR website. His national show would fit nicely on a second left-leaning XM channel from noon-3pm LIVE.

Big Eddie Schultz is taped delayed and split over two channels. A second left-leaning XM channel could correct this. I used to subscribe to Sirius and enjoyed Bill Press, but he isn't on XM and should be.

Nova M will be adding others as well. Pollster John Zogby will have a weekly, hour long show discussing how America feels about such topics as stem cell research, the war, and other hot-button issues. Dr. Mike, one of the founders of the new Nova M network, has a show that should be national.

I do enjoy AAR on XM and thank you for carrying it. AAR on XM was the reason that I switched from Sirius. However, there is so much happening with Progressive talk radio that a second XM channel for progressive talk shows is justified just to carry all the current talent that is not on XM.

60. Precisely...
the talk of people 'poaching' talent from AAR (Randi, Sam) at this time is very counter-productive... the ideal would be to have two or three COMPLETE tracks of progressive programming so there are multiple voices on at the same time for different people..

this means that after this you have (if I have the timezones right)

Young Turks - Bill Press

Stephanie Miller - Sam Seder - Jerry Springer

Al Franken - Thom Hartmann

Ed Schultz - Randi Rhodes

Lionel - Mike Malloy - Jon Elliot (I do like him, but I'll be streaming Malloy more)

62. I wonder if they really mean "9PM -12 Midnight (EST)"
...live, from 9PM -12 Midnight (EST) on Nova M Radio affiliates 1480-AM KPHX Phoenix

Phoenix, the announced host station for the show, is in MST (and we don't shift for Daylight Savings), not EST, so it would be nice to have further confirmation that the "EST" is correct (considering the other obvious error in the sentence). I'd imagine that it's probably correct, and given in Eastern Time due to industry standards or something like that.

I hope that we don't lose Thom Hartmann from our local lineup, because I find him much more informational and engaging than Malloy or Rhodes, but YMMV.

I think your time zone math is incorrect. The key letter is "S" in "EST." EST and MST are two, not three hours apart, and if you want to compare EST with PDT, they're also two hours. EST-PST=3, but EST-MST=2, right?

But, remember, Arizona doesn't have Daylight Savings Time. So, they are 1 hour behind of Mountain Daylight time, or the same as Pacific Daylight Time. But yes, the rest of the Mountain Time Zone states will have it at 7 PM. For the example of KPHX, it's 6 PM at their time, and 7 PM Mountain Time.

but you're still mixing Daylight time and Standard time. What I'm saying is that if Mike's show it on at 9 pm EST, it will be at 7 pm MST and even 7 pm in Phoenix, because we're on MST all year long.

on edit: DST ends this year on Oct. 29th, so by the 30th, everone will be on Standard time.

Going *exactly* by what's posted in the announcement on the novaM website, your start time, along with the rest of the Eastern Time Zone, would be 9 pm, because the show will start when the entire zone is on Standard, not on Daylight time, and the announcement used "EST."

WE ARE THE FUTURE!

Or, as the new socialist president of Bolivia, their first indigenous president, Evo Morales, has said: "The time of the people has come."

You know what? Nova M needs to think about some kind of bilingual Spanish/English language leftist programming. There is SO MUCH going on south of the border all the way to Tierra del Fuego--a peaceful, democratic, lefist (majorityist) revolution is sweeping the continent, with leftist governments now in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Venezuela and Bolivia, and soon in Ecuado (and next Peru), and major stuff happening also in Mexico, of course, and in Nicaragua. It would be an awesome time to have reports from/about these countries, and maybe twin up with stations there.

108. It isn't. Right now it's two stations, one in Phoenix and one in Arkansas.
The idea is to buy up underperforming stations and turn them into progressive stations.

But if they also syndicate, then it's possible that their programs will be picked up by other stations.

137. I'm guessing that the announcement was premature
Due to the fact that the novaM Home page has been changed back to their old one, that there's no mention of this on either Mike Newcomb's site or the Air America Phoenix site, and that Mike Newcomb is saying on his show this morning that he'll be making an announcement about a new venture tomorrow (Tuesday), I've concluded that the announcement on the novaM website was perhaps done earlier than the group had planned. It's possible that the webmaster was simply testing the email signup function and didn't intend for people to see the big news. The new URL that's been given in this thread is obviously a "thank you for signing up for email alerts" page, and not the main announcement page (even though it also contains the entire announcement).

I emailed Dr. Mike and I'll continue listening to his show this morning and let you know if he says anything about this, but I think they're trying to put the lid back on this, if they're even aware that the news has gotten out (and since I posted the same info on his own message board, they might).

145. The "announcement" *was* premature
Not only has it been removed from the novaM Home page, but even the contents of the "thank you" page have been removed and replace with "Offical Announcement Coming Soon." Looks like this was a bit of a webmaster "oops" or some other sort of crossed signals regarding timing.

151. It's back on the novaM site now.
The letter posted at the start of this thread from Dr. Mike Newcomb of Nova M Radio, Inc. (and also of Air America Phoenix), is back on the novaMradio.com website again, after having been temporarily removed while they watched the cat running all around after getting out of the bag. :-)

141. Official Announcement will probably be tomorrow
From Liberal Ears at the Mike Malloy Message Board:

I'm streaming Mike Newcomb this morning and he's telling the story of how he, Shelly and Anita tried to take over AAR but were refused pretty much at the 11th hour... http://www.1480kphx.com/

He says that they will be making major announcements starting tomorrow, so that's when I suspect they plan to officially "go public" with bringing Mike back on the air.

just seen on: http://mikemalloy.com/

BIG IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

Now that we have your attention . . . we are thrilled to be able to tell you that Mike will return to the airwaves Monday October 30th at 9PM ET, thanks to the new Nova M Radio Network! We are very excited about this new opportunity to get behind a mic before the November elections. We are confident that many of our former stations will soon pick up the program and that satellite and Internet radio listeners will also be able to hear the Malloy show from coast to coast and around the world! If you want to hear the Malloy show in your city, by all means contact your local station and ask for it. Or send an email to malloyproducer@aol.com and we'll forward the request to Nova M's affiliate relations department.
