Unconventional (DEM) Candidate Has Real Shot In Michigan's 7th District
ANN ARBOR - Sharon Renier is an organic farmer and single mom who lives on a 40-acre farm near Munith, a Jackson County town so small few can find it on the map.

---SNIP---

Perhaps the only amazing thing about the previous race was that she managed to do as well as she did, losing by "only" 176,053 to 109,527. She was outspent by nearly 100 to 1.

---SNIP---

This year "I have around $30,000," she said. She hopes to run some TV commercials on local cable outlets, but knows she can't afford the networks.

The Democratic Party is, however, making no effort to help, something that doesn't seem to bother her, partly because she didn't expect it. That's more galling, however, to three other downstate Democratic nominees - Tony Trupiano, Jim Marcinkowski, and Nancy Skinner. With the revulsion against the war and the congressional e-mail sex scandal, all three feel they could win upset victories. But the national party is not pouring in the money.

1. the party
doesn't have enough money to help in every race. That's just a fact of life. Candidates need to raise money on their own. If the district is truly winnable, the party will invest. They need to spend in places they can win.

3. Nancy has a really good chance to win
It's a disgrace that the party hasn't been helping her with money. She's got a new ad with RFK Jr. that she needs to raise money to get on the air.

Check it out at YouTube or at her web site: www.skinnerforcongress.com

7. I don't know much about her race
but I'll say this. Right now there are about 70 races that we a shot to win. The party just doesn't have the money to play in all of them. Its a sad fact of life. Look at Larry Kissell in NC-8. He's polling seven points ahead according to independent polls and he has very little money. Or Jay Fawcett in CO-5. He's polling even. He just got put on the DCCC emerging races list, but needs more financial. Lots of good candidates out there.

8. She's head to head with Knollenberg
On Aug. 23, before things got really hot and heavy. she was running 40 to his 44 with a 4.9 margin of error. I wouldn't be surprised if she was ahead of him now, but they haven't done another poll since then. He's been running pretty scared -- he's low on funds, as his primary was more expensive than he expected it to be. Nancy didn't have a primary. We've been out all summer going door to door, to every fair, parade, etc. we could, just trying to get her name recognition. Once people learn about her, they're pretty hooked.

Check out her website.

4. Sharon really doesn't need nor want the "party" money.
In 2004, iirc, she ran her entire campaign on $5,000 and still did as well as she did.

The small contributions will work just fine for her endeavors.

Wanna help out?

10. Current polling has her at 35% vs 43% for her opponent that
spent some $3 million, mostly "club for growth" dollars to beat incumbant gop moderate Joe Schwarz.

She is beating Tim Walberg among independent voters, 36 percent to 33 percent, with 28 percent undecided.

Walberg is a far right, anti-abortion, pro-war candidate. Cheney was just in town doing a fundraiser for him.

With the momentum for the Dem's and Reiner's resourcefulness, she just may have an outside chance, especially with the independent "undecided" voters.

All we can do is try. Could be a sleeper seat.

Also, check out the Michigan forum for a couple of related topics near the top of the list.

2. Thanks for posting this.
I've been working my tail off for Nancy. I'll have to read the whole article and forward it on to her.
