My encounter with a fundy
I was at a local eatery yesterday and spotted a gentleman talking to an imaginary friend. He was obviuosly homeless and hungry and wasn't really bothering anyone, just talking to his "friend." The only other customers in there at the time was a lady with that wierd, boufont (sp?) hairdo, long dress, no make-up -- obviously a fundy type. Pretty soon I saw the manager go over and ask the gentlman to leave based on a complaint they received from a customer (I know *I* didn't complain). The manager was at least kind enough to give him something to eat on his way out.

Fundy lady seemed quite satisfied with herself. I, of course, posessing the biggest mouth known to man (and woman) kind HAD to say something as I went out. Looked her straight in the eye and said: "What you do to the least of these you do also to me." Got the dear caught in headlights treatment. I guess her preacher didn't read her that part of her bible.

Just thought I'd share.

45. I think there are individuals that Jesus meets PERSONALLY
at the gates to kick them HIMSELF straight to hell. Just as I believe he was there personally to welcome those little amish girls home.

My list of those who will receive the personal boot is LONG.

12. I'm glad someone said it
Lot of people patting the IP on his/her back for quick wittedness.

Did you see the lady complain?

Is is possible the manager didn't want the guy in his place and made up the complaint to get him to leave?

Is it okay for me to assume that if people have big hair, a long dress, and no makeup that they're a fundy?

Wow...we're the open minded party, right? The one that doesn't judge people based on how they look? Pretty sure I saw that somewhere among liberal ideals.

17. Keep dreaming. We totally judge people -- we just base it on how
they behave. A self satisfied smirk when a homeless mentally ill man was "asked" to leave an establishment is damning evidence, even if it is circumstantial. If she was innocent, she knew it. If she wasn't, she deserved it.

Welcome to DU. Hope you enjoy your stay. Please don't play stupid anymore -- or, if you REALLY want to see an example of open mindedness, start a thread on any of the following topics:

Law Enforcement
Illegal Drugs
Civic Responsibility
Religion in Real Life (like this thread)

All of which will show that we are indeed the "big tent" party.

What you will find uniformity on is that crazy document we all believe in -- The Constitution. We're actually trying to HELP each other out generally speaking; we just have different opinions on how to do it.

We hate treasonous Republican Worms who are out to enrich themselves at the expense of the rest of us. We're all pretty united on that, too.

25. Call it what you want...
Self-satisfied smirk could have been from reading an interesting newspaper article or having a good fart without anyone hearing it. I wouldn't have a problem with this if the IP had said "I saw the lady complaing to an employee" but I don't see anything being said about that.

32. Well, you are proof positive that we are the "big tent" because I
think you are wrong, and we're both here. I *definitely* judge people on appearances, and the happiness she displayed at the man's eviction definitely implied she was involved.

As I said before, if she was innocent, she knew it, and most likely found herself agreeing with the Original Poster; if she was guilty, she got hit between the eyes. Either way, I find the comment very appropriate.

...this line

"The only other customers in there at the time was a lady with that wierd, boufont (sp?) hairdo, long dress, no make-up -- obviously a fundy type"

What would your reaction have been if the IP had said

"The only other customer in there at the time was a black man with a scraggly beard, hoodie, lots of gold jewelry -- obviously a drug dealer"

I agree that her reaction could demonstrate satisfaction with a homeless man being given the boot...but it could have been a lot of other things to. Your last sentence seems to suggest that it's fine to go around "zingging" people based on assumptions. If she was innocent, she should have been left the hell alone. And as long as there was no proof she was the complainer, better to stick to the principal of innocent until proven guilty, no?

34. Frankly, it would have depended on the neighborhood.
As someone who lived in an area where the drug dealers dressed that way so you KNEW they were drug dealers (or wannabes), I think I learned enough common sense to be able to identify some basic characteristics of "who people think they are" by HOW THEY PRESENT THEMSELVES. Wearing a suit, carrying a briefcase, walking into a business office? I'm going to assume you are 'in business.' Dressing like a crack whore in a parking lot known for its prostitution business? Certain "assumptions" by "reasonable people" are going to get made. Is it enough to get you arrested? Well, it depends on whether or not you are propositioning an undercover police officer (or ARE the undercover police officer).

You can justify your defense of the woman all you want. I'll reserve my sympathy for the mentally ill homeless man, and stick to my original stance: if she was innocent, then the comment was non-offensive; if she was guilty, then she deserved it.

47. Assume Much?
Your post assumes that I am not sympathetic to he mentally ill homeless man and states that I am defending the woman, which I am not. I am just not willing to assume that because she wears a dress, has big hair and no make-up that she's a fundamentalist.

I assume from your responses that you would find both of the following scencarios acceptable?

1. It is okay to shoot someone with brown skin who is wearing a turban and talking on the phone in Farsi because he is a terrorist.

2. It is okay to call the Department of Homeland Security and report someone as an illegal alien because they are hispanic, dressed in dirty clothes and doing lawn work.

You should talk to the current administration about what you can do for them, they love acting on assumptions instead of facts!

60. You can always tell the crimes other people are guilty of, because
usually those are the ones they accuse you of. You don't like how the original poster handled the situation; I think he was brilliant. And while your two examples are absolutely stupid, the fact you even find them vaguely similar to the originally posted situation says kind of a lot (but probably not what you were going for). Also, you *did* defend the "innocent woman" despite her self satisfied smirk because you think she's innocent of having asked to have the homeless guy booted out of the restaurant despite the evidence (the manager said customers were complaining, and there were only two customers in the restaurant -- the poster and the woman, and how she seemed all pleased with herself afterwards). No matter how far afield you get, the bottom line is that quoting one line of scripture at a person, and then walking out of a restaurant does *not* constitute either an insult, or assault. I repeat myself: if she was innocent, then the comment meant nothing to her; if she was guilty, her conscience was pricked. I say again, WELL DONE, GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT (meaning the Original Poster). And for you, Oh, Open Minded One, I laugh at you, wish you well, and have learned more about you than I honestly ever really wanted to know.

And again, Welcome to DU. Since you seem to like to argue about nonsense, odds are good you'll fit right in. :)

I agree w/ you 100%.

Pigeon-holing some lady because of her hairstyle, making wholesale assumptions about unseen actions, and confronting her based on this conjecture - is absurd and frankly, reprehensible.

And the OP, having a penchant for citing scripture, should remember Jesus also taught "Judge not that ye be not judged".

28. With All Due Respect, You're Being Completely Unfair To That Poster.
What the poster said was completely accurate and appropriate. I agree with you that based on her reaction, it is likely she was the one to complain. But that is subjective opinion only. We truly don't in fact know if it was her or not, so the poster raises a good point.

Furthermore, the poster is also dead-on accurate that the assumption the woman was a fundy based on her appearance is completely absurd.

All in all the poster used sound logic in their reply and there was nothing inappropriate about it. They weren't playing dumb at all, but in fact were being more accurately logical then almost any of the other replies in this thread. I don't think the poster deserved the "Hope you enjoy your stay", "Please don't play stupid", or "if you REALLY want to see an example of open mindedness" type comments.

58. The Constitution? She isn't being punished criminally.
The circumstantial evidence was good enough, that she was the one who complained, for a mere quotation from the Bible.

The only penalty she sustained was a quote from the Bible. If she's innocent, that doesn't hurt her. It's not like being sent to jail without trial.

Common sense is all that was needed here, not "proof beyond a reasonable doubt."

38. Welcome!
I agree with you. I'm not sure what the description had to do with being obviously fundy and a "self-satisfied smirk" to one person could be any number of facial expressions based on whatever fleeting thought was in the woman's head. Sheesh, I have one of those faces that is very expressive and I never know what my face looks like based on what I am thinking at the time. I imagine total strangers misinterpret me constantly.

On the last day, Jesus will say to those on His right hand, "Come, enter the Kingdom. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me." Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, "Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me to drink, I was sick and you did not visit me." These will ask Him, "When did we see You hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to Your help?" And Jesus will answer them, "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!"

63. They worship Odin and Balder: see proof here
Odin and Balder at Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balder

In the Gylfaginning section of Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda Balder is described as follows.

Annarr sonr Óðins er Baldr, ok er frá honum gott at segja... (snip)... Í þeim stað má ekki vera óhreint<.> - The second son of Odin is Baldr, and good things are to be said of him. He is best, and all praise him; he is so fair of feature, and so bright, that light shines from him. A certain herb is so white that it is likened to Baldr's brow; of all grasses it is whitest, and by it thou mayest judge his fairness, both in hair and in body. He is the wisest of the Æsir, and the fairest-spoken and most gracious; and that quality attends him, that none may gainsay his judgments. He dwells in the place called Breidablik, which is in heaven; in that place may nothing unclean be<.> - Brodeur's translation

Apart from this gushing description Balder is known primarily for the myth surrounding his death. His death is seen as the first in the chain of events which will ultimately lead to the destruction of the gods at Ragnarok. Balder will be reborn in the new world, however, as foretold in the Völuspá.

---

Balder is fair, good, long-haired, blonde, gentle and beautiful, and was - gasp - slain by the evil Loki and his servants, arose from the dead, and will return heralding a peaceful new age for the world. His father, Odin, by contrast, is:

"... a god of war, appearing throughout Norse myth as the bringer of victory. In the Norse sagas, Odin sometimes acts as the instigator of wars, and is said to have been able to start wars by simply throwing down his spear, and/or sending his valkyries, to influence the battle toward the end that he desires. Valkyries (such as Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, etc.) were Odin's beautiful* (nope) battle maidens that went out to the fields of war to select and collect the worthy men who died in battle to come and sit in Valhalla, feasting and battling until they had to fight in the final battle, Ragnarök.

Odin was also a shapechanger (like Tucker Carlson), able to alter his skin and form in any way he liked. He was said to travel the world as an old man with a staff, one-eyed, grey-bearded, and wearing a wide-brimmed hat, with a blue traveling coat. Odin is said to be a healer, hinting at shamanistic origins, as he is god of magic and prophecy, common practices in cultures in which shamans are prominent.

30. You rock!
I'm so glad the manager was kind & gave the man food. And thank you for speaking out!!

These self righteous types need to hear from the rest of us that we are to them & we aren't going to tolerate their hate & mean spiritedness any more.

49. How do you feel she should have acted?
"What you do to the least of these you do also to me."

What might she have done otherwise to actually live this value rather than just preach it?

54. Rude
What you describe is rude behavior backed up by assumption.
Since the words of the christ seem to hold meaning for you, go read all of matthew 7 and tell me how your little tale of "scoring one for our side" fairs.
I'm not sure which is more repulsive, your story; or all the pats on the back you got for telling it.

55. Fundie preachers never read those parts of the Bible
They only read the parts about how evil gays are, how women are supposed to be subjugated to their men, and how all of the evil non-Christians are going to burn in Hell.

59. He should have done like the old Mainah
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 10:54 AM by formercia
stopped in to the diner for a hot bowl of baked beans. He sets himself down next to this well dressed town lady and proceeds to dig into his lunch. About halfway through, he lets out this ripper that rattled the windows. Not a peep from his neighbor. About time he finishes, he lets go another one. That was too much, she turns to him and exclaims "Excuse Me!". "I apologize, Madam, I didn't realize it was your turn." he replied.

61. The Book of Matthew....
is where that quote is from, and the Fundies ignore Matthew completely. In fact, they ignore most of the New Testament and most of what Jesus actually said.

But good move, nonetheless. Thank you.
