7. Are you suggesting only Freepers are country music fans?
If that were so, I doubt the Dixie Chicks would have ever gotten another cd deal. Instead, they continue to be best-selling artists, in spite of the fact that they don't gt played nearly enough on the radio because of media bias.

Of course I know you know that, otherwise you wouldn't have voted in their defense. :) Just clearing it up for any lurking Freepers who might be confused. :hi:

11. No, but suggesting that the trend to the right is stronger there
Edited on Tue Oct-10-06 08:46 AM by YOY
Interesting how KD Lang's music is often in the Rock or Alternative sections of record stores after they displayed their outrage at her lifestyle.

Interesting how later in his life Johnny Cash showed some real contempt for what had become of the country music industry and made some major hits with a few rock/alternative groups.

I think the Chicks may wind up there soon too...although I'd hate for them to change their style. I do like it, even though I am not a country fan...at least not for this poppy pseudo-patriotic pseudo-religious BS that is called country today.

There are other Artists who have shown dislike for the trend in country: Willie Nelson, Hell even Merle freaking Haggart!

I fear that their lack of play has much to do with Clear Channel (Corporate Radio) politics and the general dumbing down of free radio.

Strangely Clear Channel stations play Greenday's 'American Idiot' and several other anti-administration songs, but that's rock.

17. Clear Channel is a corporatist/fascist organization that is doing
its level best to accentuate the divides within and between American populations - divide and conquer - us and them. The more ways we can be split apart and made antagonistic, the better the corporatist fascists can control us.

23. Agreed wholeheartedly
They have dumbed down radio so much that it is painful to listen to at times. Most morning shock jocks are just obnoxious idiots as are their callers. (Oh, a wacky stunt like dipping your ass into turpentine on the radio and screaming so everyone can hear what an idiot you are...that's Clear Channel entertainment!)

I just keep my station on NPR, grin, and bear it (Sorry, I don't listen to Pundits, right or left.)

22. That's exactly what I meant by media bias.
Edited on Tue Oct-10-06 09:20 AM by intheflow
Media consolidation and particularly Clear Channel as radio gatekeeper of what gets air play and what doesn't is one of the most disturbing consequences of deregulation, imo. Have you ever seen that movie from the '70's, FM? It's from the days when FM radio was truly an alternative to corporate radio. Watching it now is to see a plot that is quaintly naive at best, and high camp at worst. We were so innocent in the '70's!

The old time country stars may have been relatively conservative (they don't smoke no marijuana in Muscogee), but damned it they'd put up with the elitism and total disregard for the little man shown by this crop of Republicans.

84. Merle Haggard wrote "Okie From Muskogee" as a JOKE, for God's sake!
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 01:39 AM by Ken Burch
The Hag never meant it to be a fight song for Nixon.

(And when asked about pot, Merle once said "Muskogee's the only place I DIDN'T smoke it.)

And Merle Haggard also wrote "If We Make It Through December", which was not exactly a ringing endorsement of Republican economic policy.

Just wanted to set the record straight on that one.

Interestingly enough, there is only one vote button if you're against them and two if you support them. Graphically this'll give a first glance impression that there is an overwhelming "against" vote. If you think about it, the pro votes edges the nay sayers slightly by what looks like 1 percentage point for the moment. Anyway, it just looks like an easy way to split the pro vote and allow a skewed first glance graphic. Maybe I'm too cynical.

83. Then again, the COUNTRY MUSIC INDUSTY itself
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 01:35 AM by Ken Burch
has never liked REAL country music. They've spent the whole time trying to hide the banjos and the twang(and the black and white musicians playing on porches together origins)under string sections(The "Nashville Sound" of the 60's...may you rot in hell, Billy Sherrill)and keyboards and soft rock beats in the Eighties, Nineties and now.

Look how they treated Jimmy Rodgers in the 30's, or Hank Williams in the late 40's and early 50's. Look how they've treated Johnny Cash, Wille Nelson, Kris Kristofferson or anybody else whose whole thing wasn't about slickness or phony macho or right-wing politics.

The country music industry has always been shame-based about the music's roots. That's why a lot of us listen to "alt-country".

Poll needs some help. I think as long as we keep the "Enough already" votes below 50% we're good. Right now they're at 50%.

When it comes to the Dixie Chicks' outspoken political views, which of the below best fits your opinion?

Enough already! They are out of line

Heroes for speaking up
28%
Political views? They can think what they like, I'm just a fan of their music

31. Done. So, 51% of the respondents of that poll think that the Dixie
Chicks, and I would say by default "no one", has the right to say whatever they want.

When was free speech abolished? If you don't like what they have to say freeper, don't buy their music or listen to their opinions. Simple. Oh, but of course, for you, simple is really quite difficult.

Done, although the "majority" in the polls think that the role of musician is to entertain and shut up.

The Freepers have conveniently forgotten that the origin of country and western is folk music. Folk music is about real life, protest, and giving voice to that portest.
