WARNING: Lettuce recalled over E. coli concerns
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 10:05 AM by helderheid

By RACHEL KONRAD, Associated Press Writer Mon Oct 9, 6:41 AM ET

SAN FRANCISCO - A popular brand of lettuce grown in California's Salinas Valley, the region at the center of a nationwide spinach scare, has been recalled over concerns about
E. coli contamination.

The lettuce does not appear to have caused any illnesses, according to the president of Salinas-based Nunes Co. Inc.

Executives ordered the recall Sunday after learning that irrigation water may have been contaminated with E. coli, Tom Nunes Jr. said.

So far, company investigators have not found E. coli bacteria in the lettuce itself, Nunes said.

"We're just reacting to a water test only. We know there's generic E. coli on it, but we're not sure what that means," he said. "We're being extra careful. This is precautionary."

1. Get ready to take your food pellet.

I can see it now, "Here's a supplement for you. Take this instead."

2. It's really quite frightening. I remember during the primaries Kucinich
getting really sick with e.coli.

4. is it possible that undocumented workers are taking out their frustrations
over our lou dobsonian illegal-alien-phobia by crapping in the spinach/lettuce/tomatoe fields?

8. No, it's the runoff from the grain-fed cows...
which incubate E-Coli in a way grass fed cows do not.

13. wow !
but there's been grain fed cows for ages now ... does it have to do with the sort of new kinds of grains they may be feeding the cows?

16. Grass fed cows have more acidity in their stomachs...
which kills that strain of E Coli. The grain fed cows might be physically closer to those fields than they used to be, or there are fewer regulations on runoff.

12. My husband wondered the same thing.
They wash the lettuce in giant vats and all it would take is a speck of poo to contaminate tons of veggies. He also mentioned how easy it would be for terrorists to contaminate the food supply this way. Of course, we're "fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here," so that's out.

14. remember CHAVEZ the migrant leader of the l960s and 70s who had
a lot to do with lettuce, migrants, and (i think it was fair pay for the migrants?) -- where is he now? Someone needs to care. Bush doesn't. I wonder if he eats any vegetables at all and anyhow he has a food taster who tastes the food before bush eats it. if anyone is going to get e-coli poisoning, or botulism, or whatever in the white house, it won't be any of the bushes, it will be their food tasters.
