Is FoxNews real? Check out their report on NK's nuke test....
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 11:44 PM by jseankil
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea successfully completed a test of a nuclear weapon late Sunday night, a senior Bush administration official confirmed to FOX News.

The official said, however, that the underground blast only measured a registered a 3.58 seismic reaction, which was smaller than the 400-kiloton explosion the Axis of Evil nation sought.

"North Korea may not have got what they wanted," the official said.

"The Axis of Evil nation"???
Sweet lord, they should write comic books not news stories.

1. At least they didn't put a (D) after North Korea.
That's probably next.

3. Hehe
Kim Jong Il (D-North Korea) told the world it was simply a bad attack of gas following a hearty banquet.

5. 3.58 or 4.2?
Getting various numbers here. Yeah, Fox DIDN'T break the news of NK, CNN did and that is it. Just CNN. I'm still waiting for a confirmation from Japan AND China before I believe anything.

6. 400 Kiloton sought?
That seems pretty big for an "entry-level" nuke. Where did they get the idea that NK was going for 400-kt? The largest fission bomb was around 500kt.

9. A 400 kt bomb would have produced roughly a Mw 5.7 quake

13. A 400-kt device would also use up most of their weapons
grade Plutonium. I think that the "Administration Official" that FOX got that from is demonstrating the same level of incompetence that we've come to expect from the Whitehouse.

8. I did a very prelim yield estimate in
this thread. If all my math and the caveats work out, it appears to be around 2.0kt.

16. If the quake is what the South Koreans are claiming
a Mw 3.5-3.8, then the yield is significantly smaller, 178 t to 501 t of TNT, or 0.18 to 0.8 kt.

10. MSNBC is floating the possibility that the explosion in NK may be from
a CONVENTIONAL source, not a nuclear one. Apparently they are getting this speculation from government officials in SOUTH Korea....

Now, Kim the Fearless and Kooky Leader said that absolutely NO radiation escaped, but could it be that none escaped because there wasn't any?

17. I think they write comic books rather than news stories
Axis of Evil was a slogan and nothing else. There was no axis there, wven if all three nations that comprised the fiction club were more than a wee bit scary. Even that isn't quite true; Saddam was all bluster and no bite. Nevertheless, Iran and Iraq had been at war and were hostile to one another and North Korea had nothing to do with either of them.

FoxNews characteristically gives a neoconservative slogan the legitimacy that should be reseved for hard analysis. Of course, Fox buys into the nonsense that Empires create their own realities.
