New LA TIMES publisher is a Right Wing Hatchet man with ties to Judge Roberts and Ken Starr

Last night David Hiller, from the Chicago Tribune came into town to replace Jeffrey Johnson and Times Editor Dean Baquet because they "publicly opposed a corporate demand for a stringent cost-cutting plan last month," In other words they were fired. Johnson would not bow down to the right wing Chicago Tribune. Read this piece in the LA Times. about Hiller:

Hiller is known for an exceptional sense of humor and a predilection for singing in public. "He's a bit of a ham," said one close acquaintance. Hiller allows that his favorite genre is show tunes, although he says that among his proudest performing moments are several occasions on which he sang the national anthem to open Cubs games at Chicago's Wrigley Field. (The Cubs are owned by Tribune Co.)

They do add this nugget in:

His background has been varied, including a stint as law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, two years at the Reagan Justice Department (where his colleagues included current Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani…

Hiller worked with the new Chief Justice and for Reagan's DOJ back in the '80's, but what did he actually do with them outside of auditioning for Broadway? Ever hear about the Reese Memorandum? This document is written with the views of conservative professor Reese and put forth some of Ronald Reagan's most conservative agenda. Here's the document from the DOJ archives. It's a little tricky to read, but fascinating.

Page 3 of the additional memorandum is entitled subject headed: "Areas in which various conservative groups have suggested that the Justice Department take action." March 15 1982. Tax credits, schools having powers removed plus above mentioned subjects - essentially the entire social agenda of the Reagan Administration is contained herein. It is written by John Roberts, what follows is a segment on stripping the courts of its powers and a whole bunch of other issues. (document)

4. I canceled after the Scheer firing and am I glad.
They called me twice -- long conversations -- to persuade me to subscribe again. I explained to them they are just too right wing for me. They are losing subscribers and deserve to lose many more. This is a liberal city. We deserve and want a liberal newspaper.

7. Yeah!...
I've long thought the L.A. Times was the mirrored west coast clone of the N.Y. Times...

10. i'm sick of their spin, but i thought i'd give them a chance
i'm sure some of their journalists must feel like salmon swimming upstream.

they tried to dissuade me too and when i told them i didn't need two rw papers in my house ( DH reads the Daily Breeze ) they suggested that I write a letter to the TIMES stating my point of view. I guess she had heard my complaint before.

New Publisher Was Rumsfeld Friend & Part Of Controversial Reagan Administration U.S. Immigration Policy Calling For 'Concentration Camps'

Hiller's work back then, especially regarding immigration. Let's start with this: a June 12, 1981 Washington Post story detailing the "drastic action" which a Reagan presidential task force on immigration and refugee policy suggested to deal with the influx into the United States. Written by Charles R. Babcock, the article reports that "a presidential task force has decided to recommend that the Reagan administration take drastic action to prevent any new flood of Cuban and Haitian refugees into Florida by stopping boats on the high seas and detaining the newcomers in what they recognize could be called 'concentration camps.'"

5. Anti-immigrant in L.A.? You've got to be kidding.
I hope he isn't buying a house out here. Prices are likely to fall in the next couple of months, and he'll lose money on any house he buys when he has to sell and hightail it back to Chicago.

6. Mira Loma in Lancaster, Ca
Drive by some time and see if it makes you think about the NAZI concentration camps. There aren't any ovens -- not yet anyway.

8. Hey, you gotta respect a hatchet man with a law degree
We still receive the LAT Sunday (Gotta have my Doonesbury) but this will give me more ammunition to have the wifey cancel the paper.

One, we did get a call earlier this week giving us the week day paper for free. The reason they claimed was because they were moving the TV Guide from Sunday to Saturday.

(Note to self: Get a B.S. smiley.)

On a similar post I did a subscription analysis, here is what I came up with:

Quick facts about population

California 36,132,147; Los Angeles County 9,935,475; Orange County 2,988,072; San Bernardino County (The Inland Empire, the largest county in California) 1,963,535; Riverside County 1,946,419; San Diego County 2,933,462

The for the above stats is the LAT is claiming the following, "Los Angeles Times circulation is 907,997 daily and 1,253,849 Sunday."
The above five counties can receive the LAT from a newsstand or home delivered.

That makes at total population of 19,766,963/4.3(the average number of people in a household) =
4,596,968 households to sell this paper to. Only 19.75% of households are reading the paper Monday - Saturday 27.28% of households on Sunday. That is pathetic!

12. dammit... I would cancel my weekend subscription if it weren't
tied to a couple neighborhood high school kids getting extra credit in school for extending my subscription through them.

I just fired off a letter to them when I couldn't find one word about the WWC protests. WTF?
