Well everybody, this has got to be the strangest event in what has been a long, strange race stretching back to this spring. State Sen. Doug Lamborn, James Dobson's chosen candidate, may have finally jumped the shark. From www.coloradopols.com
If there was any question as to whether the 5th Congressional District race was shaping up to be a nasty political barnburner, Thursday night’s City Hall debate resoundingly answered it in the affirmative.
In a one-on-one showdown, Congressional hopefuls Republican State Sen. Doug Lamborn and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Jay Fawcett, the Democrat, grappled over many divisive issues, especially the war in Iraq and terrorism.
But, it was the moments of rancor that stole the show.
“Excuse me sir, why don’t you keep your mouth shut?” said Lamborn, scolding an audience member who was asking a question at the same time the state senator was speaking.
Lamborn later apologized to the man.
But, the incident typified a debate that yielded strong, contrasting opinions by the two candidates, who spoke to an emotional audience that truly represented a microcosm of the existing polarized political climate nationwide.
While Lamborn experienced a momentary lapse in composure, Fawcett too produced a moment that raised eyebrows.
Toward the end of the debate, a man sitting in the front row, who was wearing a Rush Limbaugh shirt and decorated in Lamborn stickers, said something underneath his breath as Fawcett was speaking.
The obscenity the man said was apparently audible enough for the former Air Force Academy graduate to hear.
“No, it’s not (explicative), it’s the truth” said Fawcett, directing his comments to the man.
Fawcett at the time was talking about his belief that the U.S. is relying too heavily on “low cost energy” sources, such as oil, and that more needs to be done to promote alternative energy options.
“We deal with it now or our grandkids will deal with it,” he said.

Yeah, lashing out at the audience. Well, at least that might draw attention away from Lamborn's crazy social policy views, although in Colorado Springs that's his stock and trade. At the end, Fawcett did have one last dig:
"At the end of the debate, Fawcett approached the man he spoke to in the audience and shook his hand.
“I wanted to thank you for being here,” said Fawcett. “I knew I was on the right track every time you shook your head while I was talking.”
We gotta stop this Lamborn guy. Please help us.
