Ford is the choice of 50 percent of likely Tennessee voters who were polled, compared with 45 percent for Corker. Among registered voters polled, the margin is 46 percent to 36 percent in favor of Ford.
The results among likely voters, considered a more reliable prediction of election outcomes, have a margin of error of 5 percentage points. The error margin is 4 percentage points for the registered voters.

Marcus Pohlmann, a political science professor at Rhodes College in Memphis, said he thinks the polls in the Ford-Corker race might understate Ford's support on Election Day.
Pohlmann expects an extremely high turnout among black voters in favor of Ford, who is black and would be only the sixth black to serve in the Senate. Also, Pohlmann believes many Democrats' intense dislike of President Bush will spur higher turnout in favor of Ford.
The USA Today/Gallup poll appears to support that argument. Thirty-seven percent of the likely voters said they were more likely to vote for a candidate who opposes Bush, with 27 percent saying they were more likely to vote for a candidate who supports the president.
