THIS IS WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE NEWS!
THIS NEEDS TO BE ON ALL FRONT PAGES/HEADLINES OF EVERY MAJOR NEWSPAPER!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061006/wl_mideast_afp/iraqunrestusbaghdad

"As far as US casualties go, this has been a hard week for the US forces," coalition spokesman Major General William Caldwell told reporters Wednesday. "We have lost 18 American service members in about the last 96 hours."

18 in 96 hours

Today is the 6th day of the month
TOTAL FOR OCTOBER as shown on icasualties.org = 23

but it's the old Dog Bites Man story - it happens every day so it's no longer news.

Boy that's depressing when you think about it.

6. Even more depressing
I can't remember a time when the casualties of this idiotic war were in the headlines. I could almost accept it if the media argued that the readers/viewers are simply fatigued from the excessive reporting of deaths, but the public has never been exposed to the information, much less been fatigued by it!

9. They're being used as rent-a-cops
This is disgusting. Right-wing contempt for our men and women in uniform, while calling it patriotism, turns my stomach more and more each day. Godd*mmit I want to stand out on a rooftop somewhere with a megaphone and shout what I'm feeling. Sorry to co-opt your post but I'm mad about this and I needed to vent.

Just close your eyes a moment and imagine an American mom ironing a pair of pants, the TV in the next room tuned to CNN, and every day she prays and hopes hers won't be the next one... then she hears, down the hall, a sound that makes the hairs stand up on the back of her neck.

It's THAT knock on the door. Someone is outside it with a f*cking folded flag instead of her son or daughter. Godd*mmit godd*mmit, how much will it take until we're out there stopping traffic, office buildings and streets, seizing back control of this country and bringing these kids back home?

(deep breaths, rant ending, I think)

No, I'm still angry.

8. The M$M gets PAID by Bush/Cheney cohorts not to report this news.
And when it gets reported on the 'Internets', Wolfie and his crazy bunch scoff. They try to dismiss it as 'evil liberal bloggers', like that means anything. You know, the 'Liberal Media' condemning the 'liberal bloggers'. And the 30% drool cup fanatics eat it up and ask for seconds!

23 more wasted lives. 23 more patriots dead for no good reason. 23 more to be brought back home in a casket. It just makes me sick.

RIP fellow brothers and sisters, the injustice that has been done will be remembered.

11. It's BEEN in the news. It hasn't motivated anyone.
Edited on Fri Oct-06-06 02:17 PM by tomreedtoon
This should be an object lesson for you guys who keep bringing up these lists of facts. They don't motivate voters. They haven't motivated voters.

You should get down on your knees and thank who-or-whatever you believe that the Republicans self-destructed on the same moral values that got them in the driver's seat. Because Democrats and progressives weren't SMART enough or COURAGEOUS enough to exploit that strategy themselves. It wasn't "moral." It wasn't "upstanding." And worst of all, it "would have worked," something the DLC fears most of all.

However, I'm sure that the Democrats will find some eleventh-hour way to blow things, assuring that the Monkey and his Pals will control this nation for several more years.

13. It has not been front page news,
It has been on page 12, 18, 22, etc., etc., etc.

This should be an object lesson for you guys who keep bringing up these lists of facts.

it is NOT just a list of facts... it is the lives of our troops and many innocent Iraqis!

And it has not been reported on the evening news reports for the 3 major networks, or in the cable news headlines. If it was the headlines daily, people may become motivated more to end this senseless death.

19. No
The MSM was forbidden by the White House to show any photographs of our children being returned to us in flagged coffins. The WH explicitly "forbade" it, and this dung-fouled chicken coop we call our national press *actually* *accepted* the command!

It *hasn't* been in the news. It needs to be, starting now.

How's this to put a twist in your boxers or panties: photos like the one posted above (above RIP at the bottom of the comments) didn't even make it to mainstream media television screens while CINDY SHEEHAN was in the news. If that doesn't make you mad...

20. technically, cheney made that happen in the first Gulf War
and they have continued this practice. I know, because my daughter's BF was one of the first Marines killed on the ground on 1-29-91 and his family could not even go meet the plane at Dover as his coffin was being taken off.

But, just because they cannot show the flag draped coffins doesn't mean they can have the news on the front page;
the count of those who lost their lives
the count of those whose lives will forever be changed by the wounds they received
the truth that every 15 minutes our troops are being attacked
the lack of electricity for more than 3 hours or so a day
the lack of jobs for Iraqis
the lack of re-contruction
the war profiteering (see www.iraqforsale.org)
etc.

28. You STILL haven't figured it out!
You think that photos dead soldiers in flag-draped coffins will anger people. THEY HAVEN'T.

This isn't that TV-movie "Friendly Fire," where Carol Burnett suddenly went from right-wing housewife to anti-war protestor because her son got killed by American troops. This is reality.

The reality is that none of the Democrats, none of the progressives, no one left-of-center directly attacked the great tentpole that held up the Republican rule; the idea that they were moral and patriotic, if not directly anointed by God. You didn't show the thing that brought down Elmer Gantry and Aimee Semple McPherson - the fact that these supposed moral exemplars were dirty, lustful hypocrites.

You were fools to expect reason and logic would move people. They don't. Emotions do. Now, are you going to start doing your job and start publicizing the very-available dirt on the right wing hypocrites, or do you want to see Rove and Company running the country for another eight years?

30. But will that alone do it?
Exposure of their hypocrisy alone? The audience you want us to publicize this to is full of hypocrites themselves. Are you absolutely sure ultimately this isn't going to result in a pat on the collective back and "more of the same"? These people work together like bees. Their end analysis is always the same: "Us against Them, stick together." I'm not expecting reason and logic to move the American public (I think we're all beyond that kind of optimism now). But it could be dangerous to rely only on exposing dirt. We'd better make sure the Dems aren't living in glass houses too before we start throwing stones. The Republicans will start throwing boulders in return or make the American public think the pebbles they've got *are* boulders. We shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket. Gosh, that's the second dumb idiomatic metaphor.

Why is everyone on this community getting so touchy and angry?
Why are we attacking each other instead of attacking the right-wing?
Full moon? Sheesh.

31. Why aren't we attacking the right wing? Well...
Quoting you:

Why is everyone on this community getting so touchy and angry?
Why are we attacking each other instead of attacking the right-wing?
Full moon? Sheesh.

Possibly because for the last six years, those attacks have been ineffective. Wimpy. A sack of loose feathers against depleted-uranium shells.

If you're asking me personally, all this stuff about the UN sanctions and the megacorporations and outsourcing that fill gigabytes of DU space don't make any sense to the people whose votes are needed, the people whom liberals supposedly care for - Joe Sixpack, working his job, trying to get ahead and failing.

It isn't a matter of "attempting to talk his language," or wearing a NASCAR jacket or that superficial crap the DLC keeps insisting upon. Joe sees Democrats who do that like seeing a big yellow smiley-button on the jacket of the man who comes to repossess his home.

It's a matter of Democrats UNDERSTANDING and SYMPATHIZING WITH Joe. It means that the cappucino-drinkers have to mentally put themselves in the shoes of people they probably find repugnant. Feel his needs. Comprehend his dreams.

That really shouldn't be too hard. At least Democrats don't generally want to send Joe into Iraq or take away his home or leave him jobless. Republicans do, and they find it very easy to slip into the minds of the people they exploit. Compared to that, getting over a little cultural contempt ought to be easy.

that Iraqi citizen militias ("terrorists", "insurgents", call them what you want, but they are really just everyday people like you and me that are resisting an invasion force on their home land) must be becoming more organized and better equipped or that our soldiers have become outnumbered and are not being adaquately equipped.

Either way, the United States has lost the "War on Terror".

16. How many terrorist attacks would equal 180,000 dead?
I am finding the number of dead soldiers to be an absolutely outrageous indication of where the truth lies.

Why would we care about preventing terrorist attacks? Could it be to save lives?

Then how do they justify 200,000 dead people on their command?

Where is the outrage?

17. Yes it should be
I've heard this sentiment on NBC national when they do reader feedback, while they don't lead with it they do cover better than they others I think.
Unfortunately the only time the war makes headlines is when there has been something spectacular happen that takes a dozen or more lives at the same time.
The Soviets tried the same thing when they were in Afghanistan, and they succeeded for a time, but, then mothers started noticing other funerals going on at the same time they were burying their children all over the country.
The numbers just became too great to ignore, we get local news coverage when a local soldier is killed, the stories are coming faster these days, and may take the place of the Russian mothers meeting at the cemeteries.

if it takes a sex scandal to bring down the GOP, then let them talk Foley 24/7

It is pretty sad, with everything that has happened in this admin, the lies, the cheating, the complete bs, even Woodward's book (which we really should be talking about) * remained untouched.
It took Foley.
Now I understand why they were so pissed at Clinton. The GOP must be a sexually frustrated group of people. they find out someone is having sex and they go nuts.

So let them talk Foley all the time....until Nov 7th!
